how long off work after lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy

Hi, I had lumpectomy and sentinel node biopsy on 24th Oct, for Invasive Ductal Carcinoma. I was wondering how long other people have taken off work? I originally thought I'd be off for a couple of weeks, then would go back until my radiotherapy started. But I don't feel remotely ready, physically or emotionally. My job is very physical, lots of moving and handling, and I don't want to risk overdoing it on the side of my surgery, for obvious reasons. I'm lucky that my employers are very supportive, encouraging me to stay off for as long as I need. I haven't seen the oncologist yet so no dates for radiotherapy or hormone treatment...

  • Hi all

Quick update - GP signed me off for another month - result!! Work are fine about it, I'm still waiting for date for oncologist appointment but am really hoping to stay off anyway until after radiotherapy. The relief is immense!

  • Hi

Time to take it easy now and look after yourself Blush

Hopefully you won’t have to long a wait to see Oncologist and start RT.

    Good Luck

    Hey

I took 2 weeks off but my day job involves me sitting on my backside.  I went back because I felt fine and that is the main point.  You MUST do what feels right for you, don't be pressured into going back before you're ready.  If your work are supportive, then even more reason to take your time.

Congrats on the lymph node result (same here) such a relief!

  • Thank you XjulieX!

I'm trying to be patient re waiting for the oncologist appointment, ironically I have already received my one year follow up appointment at the breast clinic (I said to hubby well at least they still expect me to be alive next November haha hope that's not too morbid), and today received an appointment for routine mammogram at the mobile unit - don't think I need that now!!!

Anyway in the meantime yes indeed plenty of relaxation as well as cafe visits and walks. I'm having the chance to sample retirement - could get used to it....

Good luck to everyone else waiting for results, appointments, operations - I want to get on and JFDI (just bleeping do it)!!

  • Hi Luthien

Thanks! Yes I think we have to celebrate any positive news we get. I felt on a high after the lumpectomy too just because it was something ticked off (also I am fortunate in that I actually like an anaesthetic, possibly a bit worrying!

I had a lumpectomy, sentinel node , replacement of breast prosthesis  (from mastectomy, other side, 30 years earlier) and removal of port a cath about 4 weeks ago. I'm retired now but I would've been capable of returning to a non manual job well within a fortnight, once I'd stopped having the nurse in to change the dressings. On the other hand, if I'd have had paid sick leave I'd probably have taken a month off. When I had the mastectomy 30 years ago, I took 4/5 months off - there had to be some benefit from having cancer!
