hi

has anyone been suffering with hip pain whilst taking Anastrozole?

Im 45 and been on the drug for nearly 2 years, I've had the usual stiffness in my ankles and fingers but this is different as the pain worsens when wearing heels and exercising/walking long distances. At its worst it feels like the top of my right femur has fractured and I struggle to walk however with rest and ice pads/ibuleve it improves.   I've had an X-ray and was told it's bursitis....

I don't have any other red flags (no weight loss, no tiredness, no loss of appetite).

I'm so nervous that I've also just had a bone scan however the results will take 4-5 weeks to come through. I'm worried sick as I'm convinced my cancer has spread.

I was ER+ , Her2+, stage 3 DCIS and lobular cancer in my right breast.

I'm eager to hear from anyone who has had similar symptoms.

Thank you

  • Bursitis is horrible . I get it from time to time, and at it's worst I can barely walk and can't lie on that side. It's too painful. I have had anaesthetic patches in the past, which are quite helpful.

Usually it does resolve, but if not, and all non-invasive options are exhausted, they can drain the bursa to make things more comfortable. It is a last resort due to infection risk though.

Heels are a no-no. They cause your ligaments and tendons to rub over the bones at the joints in ways they weren't designed to do. Which inflames the bursa more.

Rest is the best thing to do.

You could also try alternating heat with ice, it's more effective that way.

    Hugs xx

Thank you Karen, good advice, I didn't know that you could get anaesthetic patches! Xxx

  • Yep. They're about the same size as those hot patches you can get. Need a prescription.

    Thank you so much x

  • Agree with all Toxophilite has said. I would add a good Physio can give you gentle exercise to do and I’ve even had acupuncture. Bane of my life in my right hip and thanks Letrozole is not helping See no evilSee no evilWearyWeary Plus a sacro iliac joint issue

The pain killer patches are brilliant too

    Hope things improve

Life is like a boxing match, defeat is declared not when you fall ..... But when you refuse to stand up again ....... So, I get knocked down but I get up again. x

Thank you Leolady56.. I do yoga which helps the rest of my stiffness however my hip tends to suffer a few hours afterwards. I know it's a small price to pay as I'm a lucky lady to be stil here xx

    Hi Ladies

I have been on Letrozole since January. My joints are in such pain and lots of stiffness since I have started taking it.

I sit down in my job so when I go to stand up I end up limping due to pain and the stiffness. My GP sent me for xrays on my hips and I have arthritis but I also have Sciatica. I am waiting for an appointment with a physio so hopefully they will be able to help. Mine is my Left hip got given cocodomol only take it when trying to sleep but not getting much of that at the moment.

Hope it all improves for all of us

I've had bursitis and my doctor said it can be treated symptomatically with rest, ice, elevation, physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory drugs, and pain medication. Along with Letrozole, he suggested me to do Epsom salt baths because it reduces pain and helps your joints to recover. I did 300 grams (1.5 cups) of salt to 1 gallon of water, and this was enough, it really works. He also said that I have to change my old mattress because of sleeping on it also causes diseases connected with joints. My husband and I have read many reviews and articles and decided to buy an orthopedic hybrid mattress. I don't know how much this helped separately, but all together helped me 100% and I feel much better.

I wish you good luck, take care of yourself.
