Hi all!
Having been through breast cancer, a mastectomy and LD flap reconstruction and chemotherapy, finishing treatment last September, it may seem a little strange that I’m concerned with the red spots that are arriving on various parts of my body. I’ve been taking Letrozole since September and have had various side effects, but none bad enough to make me consider stopping taking this valuable drug. I’m exercising hard and this is keeping my weight in check, but I feel that if I stopped, the weight would creep up. My legs are swollen too and eyes itchy. These seem to be relatively common side effects and nothing too onerous, but I can’t see any mention anywhere about spots. Rough pimply upper arms, and little red, raised spots on my thighs and occasionally on my face. I’m assuming this is due to hormone changes due to the drug? It may seem a little thing, but when trying to feel positive about your changed, aging body (I’m 58)- new boob, hair growing back but curly and grey (quite like that bit actually) you really could do without SPOTS! Has anyone else experienced this and have you any advice?... I’m not a vain person but- give me a break!
Hi Makeitcount welcome to the forum and it sounds like you have already been through the mill but coming out the other side.
I had something similar to you on my affected breast and still got it I posted in the ask a nurse section to ask as I thought it was like the milk spots you know the ones that babies get on their faces and I wondered if it was milia.
The nurse said it would be unusual to be milia but said that it could be acne!!!!!!!! I wonder like you if it is to do with hormones but not sure I am also on Letrozole. Looks like we might be spotty teenagers again.
Sorry Im not being much help but wanted to make sure that you had a reply.
Sendign some huge big hugs xxxx
I had spots and rashes. Itchy ones under my chin, and white headed ones on face. Pimples on arms and legs etc. After a few months on letrozole they disappeared. I put it down to hormonal changes because I had the hot flushes and moods to go with it as well. But the body adjusted after a while. But not to the aches, pains and stiffness. Though daily exercise does help that. But luckily no sign of the dreaded spots ever again.
Hi Ladies,
I had an interesting conversation with my oncologist about Letrozole as I am due to start it after my radiotherapy which finishes mid May. I am post menopause however she said I could consider starting With Tamoxifen for two years and then switch to Letrozole for the remaining years (3-5). She said for women like myself who had been on HRT (I’d only been on it for 3 years), come off it as soon as I was diagnosed with BC ER+ the fluctuation in hormone balance could be cause of more side effects with Letrozole therefore easier to have a softer approach starting with Tamoxifen. The other choice is obviously to start with Letrozole and see if I can tolerate it and then switch to Tamoxifen if I can’t .
She was keen to weigh up quality of life alongside side effects of the drugs. I am in my early fifties, love to walk my dogs, play tennis, go to the gym , yoga etc.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?
Cheers, Westiegirl
Good morning so pleased you've got through so much but a bit of a bummer to have such a reaction. I reacted badly to letrozole and had an almost instant reaction to it with a spotty itchy rash that started around my tummy. My GP said it was
An allergic reaction so I came off all meds and by a process of elimination soon realised the letrozole was the culprit. My oncologist then put me on exemestane. Think what I'm trying to say is check it's not an allergic reaction with your GP
and know there are other tablets out there that do the same job . They all have their side effects but at least we may be able to choose which ones we can live with. On a brighter note sounds as though if it's not an allergic reaction there is hope that after awhile it clears up.
Onwards and upwards your doing great.
Hugs pearl x
Thanks for your reply- the first for me on the forum and nice to know there really are people out there!
Yes, had really thought spotty teenager problems were wayyyy in my past, but in the grand scheme of things it is very minor I know. I’ll give it a while and see how things go. It’s just strange that I’m getting these wired minor side effects 6 months after starting Letrozole.
Big hugs to you too
Hi makeitcount.
You really have had an eventful journey!
Since I started taking Letrozole in January, I have horrible spots and red patches on my face. Sometimes they get green heads, which is quite alarming and doesn't do much for my self-confidence! The practice nurse prescribed antibiotics for folliculitis, but they haven't made much difference. I'm going back to see what else she can suggest.
