Walking back to Happiness

Well. Welcome to this thread.

You may be surprised why it is here or happy it is here. Then again: ‘You have got to be joking! Do you know what is wrong with me?’ may be your response.

This all began on the Extreme Fatigue thread. On there several people wanted and needed inspiration/incentive to get out and walk. Many people see the benefits of it in their life and to help on this; mad journey, train ride, rollercoaster ride and other positively rude words journey called Breast Cancer.

It is not a thread created to make anyone feel less than they do at present. It is not a thread that will set people against one another. Being competitive with yourself or a simple challenge to yourself is the point, but not a race against others is a key premis.

The idea is that you can do any of these or none:

  1. Post when you have walked.
  2. Post how many minutes you walked for.
  3. Post how you felt before, during or after. Or not at all.
  4. Post pictures from your walk, but ones that do not point to where you live.
  5. Post inspirational quotes, thoughts or comments.
  6. A simple like of people’s efforts is fine. No need to write an essay unless you feel the need.
  7. On a safety note. Do tell friends, family or the thread when you leave and return safely. Be aware of your personal safety at all times.

Well here goes.

Either it will grow and blossom, with lots of lovely people benefiting. Or I will have egg all over my face – not for the first time in my chequered life and career.

Leolady – may be adding in the odd gallop to my walks.

PS if you don't like us don't be cruel.

  • Hi everyone

well today I managed to get out for the first time after my chemo on Monday. Unfortunately the weather was dire. Low cloud and constant drizzle ... what they would locally term here as ‘dreich’. My hubby took me for lunch at a garden centre and when we arrived home, two of my running pals came to visit.
So as you know I would normally post a pic but as we couldn’t see anything all day, there was no photo to take. So here’s one of my normal view from my house, of the hills (called Bennachie) and my chickens scratching about on a better day.
Hope everyone’s had a good weekend

  • First proper walk for weeks ! GrinningGrinning Went to Dunham NT. It was lovely, though very crowded. Had a cuppa and carrot cake at a garden centre on the way home as there was no hope of getting into the Dinham cafe. Felt so good to be among trees, with water and birds. Wiped out when I got home, but worth it.

Onwards and flatwards (don't do hills) and keep walking if you can!

  • Right so reading all your posts puts me to shame, my weight is creeping back on.... hardly a surprise when I have become a human chocolate hoarder. This is to stop, it really does and I am typing this knowing full well it won't - I've gone sweet and junk food mad over these past 10 weeks or so and the pounds (weight) are piling on.  I need to get a grip and I need to get back out walking.

Hangs head in shame and sneaks out to make a cup of tea and catch up with some of the other posts.

New week ahead, can I mentally strong enough to change this !!! xxxxx

I'm hoping this makes sense - only my mind says one thing and my fingers type whatever they like x
  • Hi, ,

yes, you CAN do it! I too am a chocoholic but have found if you stop for a day, you can stop for longer....and walking round the block will give you a breath of fresh air which in turn will help motivate you?
I’ve been forced into daily walks with the pooch this last week, but honestly have enjoyed them. Ok yesterday was a bit of a giggle with his refusal, just thankful there was a garden wall for me to sit and look at him, while he sat undecided as to going on! Funny boy!
I will try to walk 3 times a week when he’s gone home, as it is good.....and mah well be able to take a few more pics!

  • Hey

I did look for you yesterday when I dragged myself out ..Have only done bout 1.30 mile walk each day last two days . But feel better for it ..honest . Will keep doing little and daily .

You can do this you just need to find that stubborn streak that is there somewhere hiding .  If you need to sit down do so but set alarm clock for one hour then up and have a walk in garden .Then after an hour .. repeat sit down but with alarm on and plan for what you do when hour up .

By afternoon rest longer gradually slowing down fir a reasonable bedtime Like once said to you like a toddler winding down

Ditch the choc the sugars are poison ..nice at times but still poison .! Save some lower sugar choc for weekend treat

Try getting small pieces of fruit etc so when you want sugar have satsuma etc.

Sorry for lecture I'm still in chemo mood RoflJoyRoflJoy

One step at a time and ...Breathe !

You can do this.  It will take willpower but take it an hour at a time.  Is there a slimming club you could join. I found them helpful.   One you could walk to would be good!

And as Moomy says the more you give up on chocolate the easier it is.  Allow yourself a Freddo or the like in the evening - provided you have been out for a bit of a walk.  Do you have a fitness tracker?  If you do set goals on that - and small rewards when you reach them - but small lol.

One advantage (?) of my current situation is I can't get into kitchen for snacks of any sort so I am hoping I am losing a bit of weight.  Can't get on scales to check but hope I am...

But good luck.  You can do this.  We are with you every step.  Come on - do it for us because we care about you xx

  • Just about two miles with a couple of short refusals walked today, and some rewarded good behaviour around other dogs!

Life is like a boxing match, defeat is declared not when you fall ..... But when you refuse to stand up again ....... So, I get knocked down but I get up again. x

  • Ok I confess..........it wasn't walking but Happiness with a capital ' H' note because I just went to our local cinema to see Downton  Abbey in version original! Fabulous, feel good factor.......Even our small town screen managed to portray the fabulous scenery.....and the dresses!
