Hi
The DEXA scan I had when I started taking Letrozole a few weeks ago shows that I have osteoporosis so I have been prescribed Alendronic acid in addition to Adcal d3. Having looked into the side effects of this drug I would prefer not to take it. Can anyone tell me if there is a natural alternative to this bisphosphonate?

None I'm aware of Margaret. I'm on Zoledronic Acid, but don't take AI's. No side effects as far as I can tell. My dentist is happy enough.
I heard that Tamoxifen is better for the bones, there are a few folk who have switched to that in spite of being post menopause.

That's interesting toxophilite I'm really yurt struggling with bone pain with the letrozole and like Margaret had a bone scan prior to starting it which was clear at that point! I am toying with speaking to my gp to see if they would be willing to change my letrozole the pains in my large joints are awful and I feel like my granny some days. does tamoxifen have the same side effects do you think or have I just gone completely off tangent with that query xxx
From what I can gather, it does have the same side effects, but possibly not as severe as it works in a different way. I have read that Tamoxifen is better for the bones though.
Unfortunately the achy joints and so on is due to lack of oestrogen - I'm now in my 2nd menopause after stopping HRT. NOT FUNNY!! But ER/PR0 so HRT had no part in my BC.
They say the brand makes a difference too, the fillers cause trouble apparently. Some one on here managed to get the original brand prescribed specifically, as all the painkillers etc cost more than the saving on having a generic!!!!!!
I doubt the current cold damp weather is helping any either :(

Hello Margaret - I'm now coming up to 3 years since starting Anastrozole. Had Dexa scan at beg, which showed some osteopenia, so started taking Adcal D3.. After 2 years had 2nd Dexa, worsened osteopenia but not quite osteoporosis & lost 2" in height, plus bad back/hip/hand aches (diagnosed as osteoarthritis). Decided to change from anastrozole to exemestane, as being 63 decided didn't want to take tamox. Also now taking alendronic acid weekly. Have been taking this for about 4months & haven't noticed any other s/e at all. Still have aching joints & move downstairs like a crab in the mornings, but did that anyway & nothing else seems to have changed. Think we all get caught up in the 'oh, don't want any more s/e', but until you try them you won't know. You may find you really don't have any. You could see how you got on with them, then stop if the s//e were not manageable. Also think that the biggest change for our bodies is the AIs stripping out the oestrogen, even if we've gone through the menopause. I'll be keeping my eye on here to see if anyone can find a natural alternative as the biggest problem I have with the bifossywhatsits is that you have to have them on an empty stomach, then sit/stand for 1/2 hour, so no cup of tea in the morning. That is not a good start to the day!! Do hope you find some info & that you get on ok. xxx
Thank you all for taking the time to reply. I have to say, I haven't had many side effects from any of the medication I am now on but I hate taking them all.
Tessiecat1 - the pharmacist said I could do chores for the half hour after taking the tablet. I don't do many chores anyway and certainly not before breakfast!
Hmmm. I think I'll stay with the Zoledronic then. It's an infusion, so no faffing around in the morning!! Me - no tea, no function!!!!
