  • Thank you ladies ! All cwtchy here now .  Thankfully we had wood burner in front room as it's a traditional bay iwindow 1950s cavity wall house that once it's cold, it's cold .

I might contact baxi to ask them for replacement boiler.  I can send them original instruction manuals for boiler & gas fire as proof of age !!!

I was watching a Tik Tok- yes I'm addicted, of any older lady cooking cheese on toast under her 1960 (or earlier) eye level has grill.  It took me back to my childhood standing on chair watching cheese bubbling  up under the grill !  I'm not even 60 - 2 years to go , abs I've found myself saying to my daughter:

    • I remember watching Princess Anne's wedding on our neighbour colour TV as she was only one in crescent with colour TV - our first colour TV hired from Redifussion.
    • i remember putting any left over milk in bottle in bucket of cold water in pantry to keep fresh in summer as we had no fridge .
    • I remember being wrapped up in wool blanket to go to bed as no CH and ice on inside of windows
    • We left the bath water for our mother as hot water heated by immersion heater.

    • No fitted carpets , oilcloth and rugs !
    • Going to bed by candle light due to the planned power cuts and my mother putting hot water in flasks for tea after power off .
    • Having playing out clothes & shoes
    • Applying calamine lotion after day at beach as no sun cream
    • Not being allowed in paddling pool in park as kids always naughty so the smashed glass bottles in there - talking of bottles, the deposit on them so you returned!
    • Being sent to shops to get cigarettes for your parents !
    • Chips in newspapers!

  • Hi Carol

We are almost the same age. You are a year older than me.

I remember when we got a colour tv! Oh the excitement and the blue really zinged.

I do also remember my mother cooking cheese on toast under the eye level grill!

We would have candles and soup (gas hob) whenever there was a power cut. It was always late at night and so exciting to gather in my parents bedroom with all the nightlights and mugs of hot soup, cuddling under the blankets.

Hope everyone is having a good day. It is my daughter's birthday so I am off to spend some time with her and my grandson.

Every day is a challenge but this forum has shown me I do not walk it alone.

  • happy birthday to your daughter.  Have a lovely day with grandson.  I'm off to chase GP to get form back for water company which will limit my daughters water bills as she's on a meter and has OCD so uses a lot of water.  GP had form for 2 weeks .  Then this afternoon Governor meeting as preparing to appoint new Head.  Since retiring I've volunteered as LEA governor and enjoying.  A casual acquaintance trying to get me to become a magistrate but while I'm happy to be a voluntary at school and in community I'm not prepared to dispense judgement on local people for free.  My hubby ex police and I saw people he dealt with recognise him while out.  While they liked him as he wasn't an aggressive, heavy handed copper I'm nor sure they'd be so kind if I find them.

  • Thank you Grogg/Carol for the birthday wishes. It was a wonderful day spent with my daughter, her fiance and my grandson.

I hope you managed to get the form you needed from the GP.

You say you have taken on being a school governor since retirement. So what work did you do previously?

So I am now extremely tired after my day out  but a nice tired not this usual ill sort of exhaustion I have been feeling for the past 4 months.

Can I ask, for how long have people felt exhausted after radiotherapy,  and when can I start using scented shower gel?
