  • I can hold my hand up about osteoarthritis  !

So far I've had a knee replaced and have had 3 new hips. I have arthritis in the spine and neck too, as well as a herniated disc in my lumber region of the spine .....ask away

  • I too have osteoarthritis, mostly of my spine due to a long-standing bad scoliosis. Nothing to be done, sadly except pain management. left thumb has had trapezium bone removed, with a corrective sling insert, left shoulder had an occluding bony spur removed. (But I’m right handed!)  Yes, I’m a crock!

Hubs had shallow formation of both hip sockets, left a bit worse than right, used to fall over in the playground as a kiddy for no apparent reason, but properly spotted and diagnosed in his 20’s, his left hip was replaced when he was 47, right when in his in late 50’s. Both really successful. It was his lower spine that gave him trouble later, before the kidney cancer got him.

And daughter has Covid again! Gutted as she’d got solo gigs coming up in Lille as part of a festival. She’s notified the NHS and her Oxford Immunology team, just hope they can help. (But she says she doesn’t feel as unwell this time)

  • Afternoon. Lovely sunny day.

I can empathise re  osteoarthritis   Not had any surgery but know I’ve got areas which cause me problems, mostly left foot and right hip but other areas like to get in on the act  I’ve lots of degeneration shown on nuclear bone scan. I know I’ll be contacting GP about foot pain soon after looking through an orthotic shoe catalogue the other day thinking my mam would have liked these!! There were actually a few nice styles and I know I’ll wear anything as long as it’s comfy and it helps. I may find an orthotic insert could help? Anyway, that will need an online request to GP and see what happens. I walked over 10 miles yesterday ( 4 separate ) and painted walls yesterday. I certainly knew it later in the day ... I ached all over, my hip was twinging  and I was hobbling again. Just have to keep moving  though  I’m due to finish Letrozole this year after 5 years

good to be Covid negative   I’m back to being diligent with mask.

Im popping north tomorrow. Should make appointment this time as we are driving (fingers crossed), staying overnight and catching up with a few people.

  • Snowy's Mum I have just been working back through posts and read yours about what is happening to elderly patients you send from care home to hospital. I am appalled and shocked and cannot believe there isn't more of a public fuss about this. Do the families know??

Grogg you always puts things so well I think you would make a fantastic counsellor!

Santababy, I am thinking of you xx

  • I agree,   I too think an advisory role would fit you like a glove, you’re so suited. Thank you for all the sensible and helpful advice you give here.

, I’m really and truly horrified about the revelations that   has shared with us and she knows it will go no further. However, I’ve also heard similar from a hospice nurse recently so know it’s happening all too often. Sadly it seems that euthanasia is more widespread than we officially know and it bodes badly, both for us older folk and the NHS and Social Care as we had hoped to know it. I am reminded again of a consultant saying, years back about ‘when we get old and decrepit they will maybe give us a pill and a pat on the hand as they say a goodbye’

  •   This is a very recent development and new protocols are unfolding daily.

Today we had 2 nurses from some sort of team from the hospital come to see a resident who the hospital consultant has decided "is not for hospital admission". They wanted his next of kin details and they are going to contact them to put this "not for hospital admission" plan into effect. I hope the relatives say no.

This afternoon we received an email offering our nurses training in "Fast tracking continuing health care End of Life" We had never heard if it. Its some sort of paperwork.

The Liverpool Care pathway was stopped by outraged relatives and I think this is something similar. Oh they will pick on the wrong family and it will all end up in court.

Meanwhile, my Nursing and Midwifery code of conduct says I am here to protect the public and if someone needs to go to hospital I will be sending them. Regardless of any plans of jumped up nobodies.

  • Snowy's Mum, so glad to have you fighting for the people too vulnerable and ill to fight for themselves. Surely your team should make this news public.

  •   I'm sure it will all be legal and presented "In  best interests" and covered by Next of Kin consent etc. Its new protocols and procedures we will have to learn to navigate.

We have for years, had just in case needed, End of Life medications authorised by Doctors. But things seem to be stepping up a gear.

The thing is, if these teams advise you your Mum be better off with a certain plan, it takes knowledge and guts to stand up and say no.
