Finally posting - Astrocytoma grade 3 idh mutant (left frontal lobe)

Hello everyone, I joined this board a few months ago but haven't been brave enough to post, or even read stuff before now. So here goes...

I've had craniotomy resection end of May last year, ("significant debulking"), biopsy came back grade 3 astrocytoma. Had radiotherapy for 6.5 weeks and now have 6 cycles of temozolomide under my belt... plan was "up to 12"

Tbh not sure I can face another 6 months of chemo as it has been making me feel so rough, and taking longer to feel normal again each cycle - and when I feel good, I do feel almost normal. So it's maybe the contrast ?

Seeing the consultant again next week, and considering asking if I can stop the chemo...

Any experience / advice welcome...

  • Hi Hoppy

a warm welcome. Glad you felt comfortable enough to share your story.

I supported my late husband through his stage 4 Glioblastoma journey. He too had surgery and this was followed by 6 weeks of radiotherapy and chemo (Temozolozide) in combination. He coped really well that and the only real side effect was fatigue. After the 6 weeks he declined all other offers of treatment so I can't fairly comment on your situation.

Hard as it was to accept that he didn't want to continue with the treatment because of the way it made him feel, it was a decision I had to respect as it was his decision to make. I guess you are in a similar situation - at the end of the day it is your choice. I'd suggest explaining to the consultant about how you feel and seek their opinion on the benefits of keeping going or not. Weigh up the pros and cons and make a balanced decision.

This is a safe and supportive space so I sure some of the others will be along with their thoughts shortly. There's always someone about here to listen who gets it, someone to hold your hand and to offer a virtual hug when its needed.  You're not alone. We've got you.

It’s always good to talk so please remember that you can also call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available. • Hi, I'm 23 and have 2/3 grade inoperable astrocytoma in my right frontal and pariental lobe which causes hemiparesis on my left side
    •  I can't use my left arm and walking is difficult
  • Hi Wee Me, thanks for your reply, I did tell the consultant how I felt last week and we decided not to continue with the chemo. They said that most of the benefit would likely have been in the first 6 cycles, but obviously were not able to tell me how much difference it would make to carry on for longer.

After I'd made the decision both she and the nurse said it was the right call for me, which was great to hear.

Had 'end of treatment' MRI on Friday and heading back to see consultant this afternoon, to get results and find out if still 'stable disease' how regularly they will want to see me...

    Xxx

  • Hi Wee Me, thanks for asking.

Yes, MRI results were still stable, and even got called in 25 mins early Blush. So, next MRI and review in 3 months then, depending on that one, potentially extending the review intervals...

So now we can try to enjoy the next few months...
