Hello everyone.

I am currently awaiting surgery for a brain lesion. 2 cms frontal lobe.

Booked for 4 days time ( 13 days after symptoms/A&E admission).

I will be woken up during the surgery.

I am terrified of it all

Feel sick, anxious and scared.

Any tips please in this early phase?

Thank you so much

  • Hi New girl on the block

a warm welcome to the group. Sorry to hear about all you are going through.

My husband had an awake craniotomy in Sept 2020 after being diagnosed with a stage 4 brain tumour. He coped really well with it. Beforehand he spent a couple of hours with a speech and language specialist going over the questions they would ask during surgery, and she asked if there was anything he wanted to talk about eg films, travel, sports etc. On the day he was asleep for the start then wakened up so that he could respond to the questions etc and then allowed to sleep again while they finished up.

All those emotions you are feeling are perfectly normal so don't be too hard on yourself for being scared. It's only natural. I went through more emotions than I thought was possible after he was first diagnosed.

The main tip I would give is to write down all your questions and concerns and then take those notes to your next appointment. There's no such thing as a silly question and it's better to get them all out in the open. The notes will help keep you on track when you speak to the team. It's so easy to become overwhelmed in those early appointments and forget to ask things.

This is a really safe supportive space so please reach out anytime. There's always someone around to listen who gets it. Someone to hold your hand and offer that virtual hug when its needed. You're not alone.

It’s always good to talk so please remember that you can also call the Macmillan Support Services on 0808 808 00 00 - most services are open 8am to 8pm, 7 days a week Clicking here to see what is available.
