Pre-op

I'm new to all this, but wondered if there is anyone who has experienced having the sort of surgery I'm waiting to have in a few weeks' time, having had 5 weeks of chemoradiotherapy this autumn. I had a near total colectomy about 40 years ago due to chronic Chron's disease. I had an ileostomy which was reversed a year later, thankfully. Now I have a cancer in the perianal area which is going to result in surgery to remove the cancer and the surrounding area, including my rectum and part of my vagina. I will have to have plastic surgery and, once again, an ileostomy - permanently this time. Having an ileostomy again is scaring me almost as much as the rest of the surgery. The whole thing is utterly terrifying - the surgery, including plastic surgery, is huge and the recovery will be lengthy. My partner is the only one who knows the full extent of what's to come as he was present at the consultations with the surgeons. I find it pretty impossible to describe it to friends or family.

  • Hi and welcome to the board. I think the op that you’re having is called an APR so I’m going to tag in a couple of people on the board who’ve had this op and hope they can offer you some reassurance?

Did you struggle with your Ileostomy previously? If it was 40 years ago then there’s probably been a lot of improvements in bags that are available and plenty support from your stoma support team and supplier. If you type APR in the search box st the top of the screen then you’ll be able to read previous posts and experiences.

It is a big op but you can choose how much you want to share with family and friends if you feel like a lot of questions will be hard for you? Really hope everything goes well for you and you can find support from some of the members/posts on here

    Take care

  • Hi Kareno62, thanks for your reply and suggestions. I can see from your profile that you have had a pretty awful time yourself, so clearly the voice of experience! as well as being very well informed!  I'm really pleased for you that you have recovered well and the future looks bright.

I will check out the APR surgery posts as you suggested. I don't think this term has been used by the surgeons I have seen, but having looked it up, it sounds about right, so that is a very helpful pointer.

I didn't struggle exactly when I had the ileostomy last time. It was unplesant but I suppose I just got on with it. I have been assured by various professionals that there have been many advances in stoma care. I've been given the book and sample bag which I have yet to face up to looking at. I will, though, when I am ready. It doesn't greatly reassure me as it's simply having a stoma again that I dread so much. Having had the experience before kind of cuts both ways - fear of the known rather than the unknown!

It helps a lot to know that people here get what I am talking about and feeling, so thanks for taking the trouble to respond to my first post.

  • Hi

Just want to welcome you on board the forum too!

The plastic surgeons quite often get involved with the total pelvic exenteration surgery for bowel cancer . Not quite the same but maybe overlaps some of the reconstruction side and recovery process . Happy to say they are making good progress .

The whole knowledge and insight part can be both a blessing and a curse .
I wish you every success and we are certainly here to listen .

    Take care ,
