Hi to all out there! I feel like I have lived on this bloody computer since my Dad got diagnosed 2mths ago!  We live in New Zealand, and are trying to get a grip of what is going on and would love to here of positive stories from anyone else going through the same thing!

My Dad has always been a fit and healthy man.  He was concerned with a lump he felt in his tummy... after testing we found out this was liver mets from advanced colon cancer!  He has been tender in his tummy, but not in pain at all.  He started chemo 2 cycles ago, with xeloda tabs and oxaliplatin.  I am worried that living in little old New Zealand that my DAD may not be getting the best treatment, that there maybe better things out there!  He is a fit man and has a better appetite than he has ever had, so we are hoping all of these factors will make him respond well to the treatment.    I would love to hear from you all x

    Hi Jules,

Well you had fun posting your message if nothing else!  So glad you had a good time with your Dad,did you get lots of photos etc?  How is your Mum doing just now?

    Jacqui,

How did the scan results go and what is the next step for Alex?

    Magda,

Havn't heard from you for a while, how is Gregory and has he had any chemo?

    Court,

Hope your Mum is ok.  Still don't know what is going to happen with my Mum, just waiting as usual!

    Patrick,

A belated Happy Birthday to you.  Have you heard from your surgeons yet, we are still waiting for that as well.

Nothing much going on here, Nev still feeling ok and working, I do worry that he hasn't had any treatment for a month now and am really hoping they soon decide the next step.

    Take care everyone

    Ann xx

Hi All,  well went for the scan results last night and it was a mixed bag.  First he told us the good news which was that the main tumour on the liver had shrunk and so had some of the others with the current treatment of Oxciiplatin, Avastin and Xeloda.  However some other tumours have grown during the treatment including the one on the outside of the liver and that had grown from 2cm in diameter to 2.4cm since June.  Therefore we are stopping this current chemo, so no more Avastin and in 6 weeks time we are going onto Irinotecan, 5FU and possibly Cetuximab if he tests positive for the protein.

Has anyone had the Irinotecan, I know quite a few are on the 5FU and the Cetuximab but not sure about the Irinotecan.  If so any really bad side effects.

Alex will have the treatment by a drip administered over 2 days by a cathater inserted into his chest which is hooked up to a bag worn on his belt and then goes to hospital to have it disconnected.

Not good news but to be honest not as bad as I was expecting.

Anyway I hope you are all ok.  Glad Jules got to go on that fishing trip and I hope Ann you hear soon from the surgeons soon.

The boys are ok, seem to take it on board and then get on with everything.

    Take care

    Jacqui

Hi all, great to hear from you Ann and Jash.  I hope Ann you hear from the liver surgeons soon and can get moving, always unsettled when things don't move as fast as you'd like.  Jash, yes a mixed bag, but the fact that the liver tumors have shrunk is good news.   Dad has had the 5FU with Irinotecan.  Dad did seem to get more infections with this treatment, but i do think that was just Dad unfortunately.  Dirorhea was quite bad along with nuasea, but with the juggling with more drugs it was sorted out.  He enjoyed not getting the tingling in his fingers from the Oxyplatin (Sorry spelling!).  The portable pump and bottle for two days was fine and easily hiden under a loose shirt.  He did loose his hair on this one, of course not a biggy, but I think he did enjoy getting about with his hair as people who didn't know him didn't know he was sick when he still had his hair in tact.  It is coming back now, and white!  Looking very distinguished!  I hope the change in chemo has good effects on this tumor outside his liver, and fingers crossed for cetuximab.  Good luck to everyone! - Jules

  • Hi all,

Happy Birthday Patrick.  Hope you had a good day.

Thanks Anne and Jules for asking after my mum. You're great. She has been doing really well and did not even have any pain last month. We were told last week that her chemo had been reduced round 2 . Which explains why she was doing so well!!!  This really threw me. Not so much that her chemo has been reduced as it is round  10 in total of her oxa and cap. I do realise it becomes a balacing act but I felt she had the right to know. Anyway I was going to email the consultant as I felt it could have been better explained. However I got a wee phone call from her saying not to. She thanks everyone for their care and attention before she leaves the ward. Thats just her way. So we remain grateful for her care and swallow the wee bits that could be done better.  She has lost more weight following a wee virus so she has been trying hard on that front.

Jules I agree that this journey has only deepened what was already experienced. Deep love. So glad you had a good time when you were away . It have images of your holiday home in my mind. Thinking of you all . Love to your mum and day.

Anne I hope that you are coping with all the caring you have in your life. It is a funny set of emotions even when you know surgery is in sight. Hope your mum is keeping ok too.

Nancy , welcome and I am sorry that you and your husband have to face this. I was wondering if you have discovered the COLON CLUB . It is an American web site aimed at the under 50. It has lots of current practise in chemo although their practise does vary to Europe.

Jash I hope you have discovered more info about the next chemo. Your doing a great job meeting everyones needs. Your boys sound like standard teenagers which is down to your hard work.

    Love to all

Hi to  all, just a wee note to say a big hello to everyone and to hope that things are going as well for you all as they can be.  Things here are going OK.  Dad hasn't gone down hill as they expected he would have by now, so we are enjoying some good times.  He has an Onc appointment next week and the Onc had said that if Dad wasn't well enough don't make the trip down (it's a 1 1/2hr drive), so obviously he expected things to go down quick.  But Dad has actually put weight on and definately not doing any worse at this stage, so I told him he should skip into the Onc appointment!  Judt taking one day at time and it seems to be working and Dad has a great attitude so I'm sure that all helps also.  Well I hope that no one posting on this site for a while is a sign of people getting on with things and things are OK.  Love to you all XOX

  • Hi Jules, Good to hear from you. I have been thinking of you all. I am glad your dad is managing well. Putting on weight!! Think that will give his onc a bit of a surprise. I Hope you are managing ok too.

We are doing ok. Today was a good day!  However it is round five next time and it shows. Lots of weight loss etc. She did manage to have the granchildren round for tea, so that pleased her.

    Still holding on tight!!

    Take care
