Recently My mother was diagnosed with Rectal Cancer Stage1 with 3-4 cm from Anal. Can this be treated using Stapling Technology OR Should definitely go for colostomy OR Radiation/Chemo for 5 weeks and Surgery after 7-8 weeks?
Any help would be highly appreciated.
Many Thanks

Hi. The consultant will advise you of the best treatment plan but rectal cancer is generally treated with chemoradiotherapy for 5 weeks to shrink the tumour then surgery to remove it. Depending on whether the surgeon can rejoin the bowel may result in a temporary Ileostomy or a permanent colostomy if there isn’t enough bowel to rejoin. I’ve had to google stapling technology and it appears to relate to the size of staples used during surgery which I think will be the surgeons decision!
Bowel cancer is very treatable and your mum sounds to have caught it early on which is good news. I’ve attached a booklet about the sort of surgery and treatments used.

Thanks Karen, we are suggested of the Trans Anal excision of full thickness lesion.
The tumor would be removed and 1cm surrounded skin will be stitched together.
Do you know if any patients treated that way? Would the cancer cells be coming back again when done that way?
Thanks
I typed trans anal in the search box at the top of the screen and it brought up 1 post from someone who’d had this sort of operation but I don’t think they’re still active on the board. No one can predict if cancer cells will return but your mum is at the earliest stage and will be closely monitored over the next few years
