I recently had a colonoscopy as a result of getting a home testing kit through the post as I am just over 60. I was shocked that they have discovered a tumour. I was not expecting this news and although I have been referred to the appropriate services and awaiting further scans and confirmation of what my situation is my mind is going into over drive. I used to feel a small ache in my side and put it down to a stitch , it was nothing too noticeable but since being told I have a tumour I am constantly now feeling pain in my side and focusing on this and I can also feel a lump. I have a CT scan next week and will then be told soon after what my options are but I am struggling to stay optimistic and already convinced myself that the news will not be good. I have gone from two weeks ago looking forward to my future to constantly thinking of this and only this. I want to have the CT scan results and don’t at the same time . Any advice on how to stay positive in the meantime would be appreciated.
Thak you Pattyk, I've just spoken with the colorectal nurse, my cancer is just inside my anus, my consultant has sent over my file to Manchester to see if there's someone who could do a "local" op, as otherwise its a big op via the stomach, amd probably being left with a stoma, though that's not too much of a problem for me. So I now have more waiting, at least 2 more weeks, I was diagnosed on 11th June, and had the 2nd colorectomy on Thursday just gone, 2 days after I saw the consultant. I'm also annoyed that they've just built a 2nd Christies hospital onto to my local hospital yet I would be travelling into Manchester. But I guess that's what's gonna have to happen. Also the 1st colorectomy showed 2 tumors, but when I had the 2nd one, both the tumours that were on the 1st one were nowhere to be found, but there's this one just inside my anus, which I may lose, and I don't know what means, because I forgot to ask, I'm hoping to at least have a telephone call with the consultant again, as I have other questions. I hope your husbands treatment helps, thank you for taking the time to write to me.xx
Hi MissTee. They might have meant that you would lose your anus. If the tumour is just inside your anus then they perform an APR - abdominoperineal resection- because there isn’t enough bowel left to stitch back together then they sew up your anus - it’s sometimes causally referred to as having a ‘barbie butt’ with permanent colostomy (stoma). There’s lots of people on here had it done and although it’s a big op they recover well and find their stoma to not be a problem.
Might be wring but you could add it to your list of questions for the consultant
Take care

No Problem Miss Tee!

Hi kareno62 thanks qgain for the help about losing my anus, my consultant says he's sent my results to Manchester, as they have a piece if equipment there that they can use to see how far the tumor has gone through the bowel wall, and if they could remove it "locally", and oncologists have said that I may need radiotherapy and chemotherapy, or maybe the op through the stomach. But I've now got a 2 week wait for Manchester to decide what they think. I'm slowly slipping off my tiny island, and being strong for those around me, I'm venting, and I apologise. I don't know where to turn, my bottom has now started to itch and become painful, the tumors just 4cm into my anus, its 35mm, I can't even get a telephone call from my GP for 3 weeks,my consultants away for 2 weeks, I don't know what to do. Sorry for being a pain xx
Hi MissTee
I am Shocked that you can’t get a telephone appointment for three weeks given your circumstances. However please give our helpline staff a call . They can access Macmillan nurses and talk things through with you .
0808 808 0000. Please reach out to them . They will give you assistance . You are not on your own . Every Boots chemist has a pharmacist that gives cancer advice. You can go to one of them about the itch too .
Take care ,
