Hi all, A symptom I have been having for about 4 mths+ now is heavy sweating at night....... no heating on, but duvet or t shirt very wet. Just the top part no where else.

I have found this can be associated with many things. One being a Lymphoma cancer. I am T3 N1 M0 Stage 3. Ascending Colon removed 2weeks ago. healed well except for on port hole and area which is still painful. Seeing surgeon this coming Friday for post surgery check up before Chemo starts mid Sept. See Onc early Sept.

No other symptoms, no lumps anywhere else, no weight loss etc.

Night sweating can also be a sign of a natural and positive body reaction in fighting an infection /  fever as well.

Has anyone else had this sort of symptom?

There is a standard blood test that can check for Lymphomas.

After all my biopsies and blood test this has not been raised.

With all the standard blood tests that are done when you have diagnosis for Colon cancer and then surgery (I had 5 vials of blood taken) do these blood tests pick this up or does the team need to do another specific blood test?

Or is this sweating a complication of Colon cancer anyway... thoughts and experiences welcomed.

Will contact my key workers this coming Monday

Best wishes to all.

Alan

Hi Alan, I had my operations the same day as you, I had a temperature and my glands swelled under my armpits on days 11 &12 went to doctors who said to keep an eye on its and gave me some antibiotic cream to rub on my scars as they were a it red and warm to touch, feel much better now and my glands have gone down.

    Take care

    Hi Frodo (Alan),

I haven't had these symptoms myself but as a starting point I Just wondered if you have been taking your temperature, ideally at different times in the day and on a regular basis (and recording it) ? If there's an infection or inflammation somewhere in the body it could cause these symptoms. If your temp is normal then it will help to pin point the cause by process of illimination.

It must be really uncomfortable for you. Luckily you will be seeing your consultant soon. Have you discussed this with the specialist colorectal nurse ? They usually give you their direct tel number.

Good luck with your recovery !

Alan - I had my operation at the end of June and had night sweats for about 4 to 5 weeks afterwards exactly as you describe - torso only and drenched through.  My doc says it is a common side affect after major op .  It ended and then normal nights sleep.

Hi Jim many thanks for the post, appreciated... now seems to be OK.......  But I was concerned with paranoia setting in thinking I had Lymphoma...

I did read somewhere that this can be a result of the body focussing on healing itself, maybe a lot of energy / rebuilding / healing going on. Which must be a good sign.

Having said that I still have one porthole and where the key hole instrument went across from left to right side under belly button being rather painful / sore t times. Even after 3+weeks.

I feel this is due to internal part taking longer to heal than the visible outside (all healed up in two weeks) while also taking anti coagulants not helping the internal healing process plus this painful area being right on the belt line (not helpful) has been aggravated. Now have a walnut sized haematoma right on that port hole

    Thanks again.

    Hi Frodo,

I am also experiencing night sweats, but mine have been going on for the past nearly three months. Like you I have looked up all the possible causes & spent a day or two worrying about other cancers etc.

I now think it is just part of the healing process. I hate them & have to dry myself off a a few times during the night, I use a

fan which has been invaluable. They eased off for a while but have come back this week. I dont know if it is related to what I eat but I am going to monitor that.

I had an open AP resection after lots of chmoradiation.

    Good luck xxx

    Hi @lama,

Yes I had really bad night sweats but eventually came to the conclusion that the chemotherapy had restarted my menopause symptoms, big time.

The solution for me turned out to be HRT. They completely stopped within two weeks, it was like a miracle. I know there is side effects with HRT but, for me, quality of life won out.

Obviously this may not be your solution but that is what worked for me.

    Good luck, love Helena x

Had my surgery on the 8th Jan and was waking 2/3/4 times a night drenched in sweat. I mentioned it to the stoma care nurse on the phone and they had me in the hospital for a blood test to check for infection. None found.

The other day we transitioned to sleeping on a traditional Japanese futon - tatami mat with shikibuton (NOT the horrible sofa bed things you might recall from the 80's) because of my back problems.

Weirdly the night sweats stopped instantly.

It's definitely because of the body healing and going through its recovery process but I have no idea why changing bed worked though.

    Hi

I jumped over from Womb, uterus group. I had terrible night sweats for about 4 weeks post hysterectomy. Torso only but utterly drenched. It just seemed to stop at some point - maybe post surgery healing or maybe Heparin shots for DVT prevention. Absolutely normal now 6 weeks post op.
