Hi there I have rectal cancer not started treatment as yet went Tues just gone to see oncology. The plan for me is 5 days of Radiotherapy at Sheffield then after that Chemo for 3 months comprising of intravenous for 2 hours, then tablets for 2 weeks week off then start again. My question is has anyone had this program and how was they in themselves I know everyone is different and react differently. Cheers Martin

  • Hi Martin

is it CAPOX you will be having ?
my hubby had radiotherapy with capcetabine tablets then 4 lots of IV Oxilaplatin with more tablets for 3 months - treatment every 3 weeks

We started a thread called CAPOX JOURNEY which you can search for on here. Lots of people added to it over the weeks so can be useful.
Each chemo has its own side effects so if you can share the type then maybe others can help with more specific info.

Good luck with your treatment- you’ve got this ! And there is so much support on here if you want it

  • Yes Bella that’s the one I am going on. Thanks for replying

  • Hi MartinR,

I started on that regime, but I had the DPD deficiency so they swapped me to once fortnightly infusions and then 2 days of 5FU via a pump.  I'm having six months in total, but no radiotherapy as I had the op first, so mine is belt and braces (I hope)

They keep a close eye on your side effects and make adjustments to you regime as needed.  They also give lots of drugs to help to manage the side effects so that you don't need to suffer through it.

I was ok in myself on the first regime, I just had lots of runs and they didn't want me to get dehydrated so swapped it.  I'm fine on this one (so far) exception for the neuropathy.  I hope to manage to complete the whole lot.

I still get side effects, e.g. fresh tap water tastes 'creamy' for a few days, but very much things that can be lived with considering the aim of the treatment.

    I hope that helps.

    Best wishes

    CerysM
