I am 5 weeks post op following surgery for low rectal cancer. Complete APR following 5 days radiotherapy. My wound is really slow to heal and yesterday I was told by practice nurse that there is a 1.5cm cavity. Has anyone experience of this and how did you manage not sitting? Lying sideways in bed or on sofa takes it toll on the hips and lower back. Feeling very despondent and wondering just how long healing will take.
Hi MaggieS I didn’t have this operation myself but I think Elijahs nana posted recently about the recovery
Hi MaggiesS. So you are on the same journey. Can I first off reassure you it does get better it really does. At 5 weeks I too could not sit, well maybe 10 minutes max. It’s a major surgical procedure a lot of healing and nerves to rejoin up. I didn’t have what you are calling a’cavity’ I found my district nurses didn’t understand what the procedure was. I would. Certainly contact your surgeons Secretary and get an appointment to see him. Send photos if necessary, that’s what I did. I had to go to see mine in an ambulance (couldnt sit) all was fine but the assurance the healing is progressing is so good
I use a valley cushion. They are expensive, you can hire, but it does really help I’m now 12 weeks out and I’d say from 8/9 weeks I could sit to eat a meal, that is a real treat. Stick in there, try to walk about as much as you can to get your strength back. you will get there it’s just being patient
Hi Elijah’s Nana. Thank you so much for replying to me and for your reassuring comments. I was loaned a valley cushion by my stoma nurse and up till this week I was trying to sit longer, feeling I needed to get myself back to normal as soon as possible. Unfortunately, when my wound was examined on Wednesday, it seemed to have developed this cavity. It had never fully healed though the different nurses I saw kept saying it was healed fine. I did get such a variety of advice, it was difficult to know what to do for the best. So, I am back to minimal sitting and lying on my side! I am interested to hear you say walk around as much as possible - it does help certainly, even if it’s just to feel normal briefly.
I’m glad you are feeling much better at 12 weeks out, that must be a relief for you. I’ll hang on in there.
I just want to say hang in there as it does get better honestly.I had a complete panproctocolectomy and my rear wound did heal(even if the area is certainly not the most attractive thing)
I was given dressings with silver in them and they helped.
All the best
Kath
Thanks so much Kath, it seems never ending just now but I take heart from comments like yours and Elijah’s Nana. Actually saw an on duty surgeon at my local hospital surgical assessment unit today who said the cavity isn’t too bad, 1cm, so he advised it didn’t need packing just daily clean and dressing. They have prescribed more antibiotics as a precaution against infection. Not heard of silver dressings, so many different opinions from medical staff I’ve seen, it’s very confusing!
Glad you are healed after such a major operation x
