I’m brand new to chemotherapy - I had my first infusion yesterday and have just started taking the pills. Apart from the usual side effects (primarily first bite problems, cold, loss of taste) I’m having periodic issues with a kind of spasming pain that affects my whole torso. It doesn’t last long - perhaps 3 minutes - but is intense to the point of making me cry out when it happens. It’s hard to say where the pain really starts, but seems briefly to affect my whole upper body, back and front. It seems to help a bit if I stand up and I try to breathe through it. It’s quite scary, though, when it happens.
Has anyone else experienced something similar? Incidentally I had a resection following a stage 3 bowel cancer diagnosis (no bag) and the surgery went fairly smoothly.
Hi Trojankitten I’ve no recollection of having this side effect but I would ring your 24 hour chemo support number or the unit today just to be on the safe side?
Take care
Karen x
Thanks - they mentioned the heart issue, but don’t seem too concerned about the spasms (I just need to let them know if they return.) Anyway, I’m being kept awake tonight not by spasms but hiccups - I’ve had them all day. These drugs are very strange
That's good x they are strange indeed! I find the infusion worse, bad pins and needles etc. Hope you got some sleep!!!! X
I did have problems with hiccups during my chemo too.
These drugs are strange indeed.
I had to "white knuckle" my way through it. You've got this.
Evening,
YES! It was horrible.
i finished my chemo at the end of August last year but the night after each Oxaliplatin infusion was horrible. The first time was terrifying. I was lying in bed and a sharp pain started in the lower left of my torso and as I tried to change position to ease it, it spread. I then froze, thinking maybe moving aggravated it but that didn’t help either because, as you’ve described, it took over my whole torso with this unbelievable spasming. I didn’t know what was happening. I live by myself and wondered is this a heart attack? It passed in a few minutes and only happened that first night.
On my second round it came again and was equally horrible but I knew it would pass. By rounds three and four I knew it was going to happen and I dreaded that first night after the infusion.
I too suffered quite a bit from cold touch and first bite and had a similar stage 3 with resection.
Unfortunately I have no words of wisdom to pass on.
Do you get it more than once with each infusion?
All the best, Paul
You’ve described my experience perfectly - especially the uncertainty about whether shifting position helps, or not. I’ve only had one infusion so far, with three first night spasming episodes. The hiccups are still with me, as well as a hard-to-describe dirty/poisoned feeling. I hate being on these drugs. (But suppose I’ll get used to them.)
You got hiccups too!
Im sorry you’re getting the spasms for more than one night. I really hated the chemo. I’d have taken another operation over chemo any day ️
I was meant to get 8 cycles but it was reduced to 4 because of my side effects. It’s always in the back of my mind that maybe I should have held out for the 8.
