I posted prior to my surgery, so I offer an update on the surgery and recovery.
November 9th 2020, Charing Cross Hospital London. Total pelvic exenteration. Colorectal, Urology, Plastics.
First week was a delusional mind-trip on the operation/pain drugs. It is still weird to recall what I thought was happening, but I made it through.
All 3 surgical teams were pleased with the result of their contributions to my surgery and their daily visit to my recovery bed were positive and motivational.
11 days flat on my back to allow wounds to heal. I implemented my own daily leg and arm exercises as they were fine to move. It was my torso and pelvic region that had to be immobilised.
I was allowed to stand after 11 days and added walking and standing exercises to my daily routine. Sitting was limited by the plastics team - I could only sit on their air cushion and time was limited (initially 5m then 10m, etc.)
After 25 days recovery in hospital, I was discharged into the care of my sister/brother-in-law.
4 weeks later and I continue to see improvement day by day.
Siting is still only allowed on the special air cushion and becomes uncomfortable after 45 minutes.
Daily walks of up to 1 hour. Two half hour daily exercises focussed on balance, movement and flexibility.
I am still physically, mentally and emotionally shattered from the experience but I am delighted to be where I am now.
Still some way to go.....
