Hi my husband was diagnosed with T4 n1 m0 bowel cancer on 31st October 2020 he is set to have neo adjuvant chemotherapy tomorrow there has been so many delays in he's treatment our hospital lost he's dpd definicy bloods then the pharmacist didn't make up he's chemo that he was supposed to start today and for 5 weeks leading up to he's diagnosis he was told by GPS and hospital that he was constipated it was only the day he went to hospital dehydrated and very weak that they properly investigated him and found the tumor anyway he's finally starting treatment tomorrow but he is having terrible painful bowel pain like spasms he ended up in A&E over the weekend with them. Can anyone tell me if it is normal to have these pains and spasms with bowel cancer it is very upsetting to see him in such pain.

  • Hi

Can I ask what advise the A and E department gave ? Remember he is under the care of an oncologist now and if it was my relative I would be flagging that up . If I am reading it correctly his tumour is in situ and he is about to commence treatment . My concern would be why he is having spasms . My mum had them during chemo , caused by chemo but not before it .
Did they mention if the bowel was blocking slightly and any dietary changes ? If not I would get onto his oncologist and seek their opinion on how to go forward .

During chemo my mum was in agony at one point and we contacted the surgeon who diagnosed her and that was very helpful .

In the run up to Christmas there is still on call staff for all specialists so don’t be afraid to phone the hospital . If you feel he needs hospital intervention I would be inclined to say you are worried about a bowel tumour blockage . They may have reviewed his scans and feel there is no danger of blockage in the colon and there is sufficient room and it is just a spasm but you would need guidance on how to manage the pain then .

I will see if I can get any information for you .

Also our helpline staff would be happy to chat to you . 0808 808 0000.

It may well be a spasm but for me I would want to know what’s causing the pain and how to manage it . If he is on certain pain killers they can interfere with Bowel function so I think you may want a Doctor to assess and review him .
    Take care ,

  • Thank you for replying. A&E admitted him and did a CT scan that showed he's stent was still in the correct place and there was no blockage seen they just advised him to take laxatives to keep things flowing.

He went to hodu today and started he's 1st chemo he's on oxalaplatin, irinotecan and 5fu he had the pain all day whilst on the unit and still in pain now he is home I have contacted the GP as the nurse in hodu told me to and I have asked for some pain relief for him they have prescribed him a morphine patch it is all very alien to us and we don't know what is right or wrong.

He's tumor is t4n1m0 he is have neo adjuvent chemotherapy then surgery and more chemo. Sob

  • Hi ,

That is so good they checked everything was able to pass through the stent . That is very reassuring.

Hope you made some progress with the medication and it is distressing . My mum used over the counter buscopan for bowel spasms on chemo . It helped .

Great he has started treatment and now to some shrinkage and relief hopefully .

Just be careful with portion sizes tomorrow if he is having some Christmas dinner . You have no idea the amount of people who struggle on Boxing Day !

Sending lots of love to both of you .

  • Very reassuring and so far so good with the chemo he's only suffered a bit of nausea so far. We have the nurses coming today to take he's 5fu infusion off.

He takes buscopan too and the GP gave him morphine patches and some naproxin for the pain he's been having too and it all seems to be helping. Xx
