My dad has secondry bone cancer with prostate cancer as primary site.  We are trying to find a cushion for him to use in the car as he finds it so uncomfortable to sit for any period of time.

Has anyone come up with a solution to this problem?

    Hi Shemsmum,

I'm new to this site but my partner was first diagnosed with bowel cancer 3 years ago, he now has secondary to his spine, he too finds sitting uncomfortable, we had a word with our district nurse and she brought him a specialist cushion.  Also I found a 'U' shaped cushion, this has a gap in the middle which keeps the base of the spine from touching the seat, I think it's memory foam inside.  This was from Argos (hope advertising isn't going to get me in trouble) it's in the disabled equipment area of the book. There are probably other stores you could get one of these.  This may sound a little odd, but he also finds a folded duvet quite comfortable, or you could try a thick bed pillow, if he sits on narrow edge then some of pilow can go behind his back as extra comfort and support.

Not sure if any of this will help, but hope your dad will be able to find something to make him feel a little more comfortable.

My dad also had prostate cancer which by the time of diagnosis had spread to his spine (though had also caused spinal cord compression, a condition that I would encourage anyone at risk to find out information for and be monitored by specialists even though it only affects a minority - the worst though that can happen is irreversible paralysis).

I cant advise on cushions as he was bedbound due to the SCC. But I would advise asking the district nurse, community or hospital nurses involved, perhaps even an occupational therapist.

Do also be careful of pressure sores, these can happen due to inactivity, remaining in one position without being moved or turned - typically patients who are not mobile which thankfully isn t the case for your dad. But also I think that it is worth thinking about preventing pressure sores anyway. There are pressure relieving mattresses, and probably cushions too.

I hope that your dad is getting expert care and treatment and is as comfortable as possible Pain medication may also be needed where discomfort is great as well as getting the right adaptations and supports. The prostate cancer charity helpline may also be able to help as well as the macmillan one - I phoned both when dad was ill and got a response.

hi. my dad has bone cancer so yes - i am cushion searching too.

i went to a bed manufacturer and got them to give me a memory pilliow - that seems to be helping him as it fits around him and supports him , so far so good.

Thank you very much for your help and advice.  It is so difficult getting through all of this as we hate to see him in pain.  I will call the prostate cancer line and see what they advice.

You could get one custom made perhaps? I recently bought some custom foam sofa cushions and they were made in the size I needed and you can pick different types of foam.
