After five weeks in hospital with fracture of femur my Mum has really sunk into a deep depression. I'm at a loss as how to help her...its heartbreaking to watch, I dread visiting because there is nothing positive I can say (I try to engage in light conversation but she sees negativity in everything) Should I try to get her counselling?

  • Hello , I’ve just read your post and hoped that your visits to your Mum were getting easier for you. I’m also hoping to encourage people just reading posts and not joining in the conversation to just join in when they are ready.

I looked at your profile to see any news about your Mum and looked at your latest post, I saw you were going to look into counselling, I hope everything is going as well as it can be.

Thanks KT and great to hear you have NMD. Mum was mis-diagnosed with depression in her care home.. I’m angry about that. She was actually very very ill with too high calcium levels, low blood count (is that platelets? ... I’m so green when it comes to medical terms) and she has been back in hosp now for 2 weeks. She’s poorly but her scans have been clear, except we are still waiting for results on leg X-ray (she broke it due to secondary bone cancer). Thankfully she now has talked with a Macmillan nurse and will be assigned a hospice nurse when she gets home.

  • Hi , that sounds great that she’s spoken to a Macmillan nurse. I’m a bit green to when it comes to medical terms to, I do get my blood results in an app, there are so many of them and it gives the normal range for me and what the results say, the NHS site has a section that helps give more info on the tests. I didn’t use to be bothered about the results if the doctors weren’t bothered and treatment is continuing. One week my calcium levels took a big dip though and I thought maybe I should be paying more attention and asking more questions but mine are back to normal range now. When my Mum used to go into hospital (not cancer related) she used to enjoy the company, so I hope your Mum although poorly is doing ok.
