Injection/Infusion medications prescribed to be kept at home

Dear team,

My father has metastatic prostate cancer which has spread to the bone resulting in painful bony metastasis, mainly in his pelvis, but also in other areas of the body. The cancer has progressed whilst being treated with Enzalutamide and LHRH analogue injections, he recently underwent RT treatment to target the cancer in his pelvis to help with pain management. Dad's current state of health is well aside from the severe pain and needing to walk with a frame.

Recently my dad's GP prescribed a combination of Levomepromazine, Midazolam, Morphine Sulfate and Glycopyrronium Bromide (all injectables) to be kept at home for "when they are needed", but with not much else in terms of instructions, its left us a little confused.

None of dad's care team have spoken about life expectancy yet, so the prescription of the above medications has worried us all, a lot. What circumstances are these drugs used in? I've seen several posts about these drugs being used in the end of life care, but we weren't aware that dad was close to this stage yet, hence the worry. Could someone help clarify?

Thank you in advance

  • Hello

i am Brian one of the Community Champions here. I have just noticed your post has gone unanswered. I can't answer it as I have a different cancer but by me replying it will be "bumped up" to the top of the group and be seen and replied to by other members of this group.

My understanding of the medication left with you is that it is for use in your father's care if needed. This link to the NHS  should help you understand why they have been left with you Just In Case Medication

I do hope this helps. Remember our Support Line on 0808 808 00 00 (8am to 8pm 7 days a week) is their for the whole family.
