Hello All,
I have kidney cancer with secondary bone bone mets. recently diagnosed. One of the bone areas diagnosed is my left hip which is causing me significant pain at the moment. Paracetamol and heat pads provide some relief. Morphine and codeine based tablets make me ill so are off limits as medication. Radiotherapy has been mentioned but the radiologist on reviewing my last scan said the areas are too small at present for therapy. Has anyone experience with similar pain and any guidance as to what pain medication might help?
Thank you
Hi and a very warm welcome to the online community
I can't help with your question about what pain medication might help you but I noticed that your post hadn't had any replies.
I don't know if you've tried typing 'pain medication' into the search bar in this group to see what other members are taking. However, as you have said that certain pain medications make you ill, your best bet would probably be to speak to your CNS, as she has your full medical history at her fingertips and should be able to find you something to help with the pain.
When you have a minute, it would be really useful if you could pop something about your journey so far into your profile as it really helps others when answering or looking for someone with a similar diagnosis. It also means that you don't have to keep repeating yourself. To do this click on your username and then select 'Profile'. You can amend it at any time and if you're not sure what to write you can take a look at mine by clicking on my username.
I hope your able to get some effective pain relief soon.

Hi Latchbrook, thank you for taking the time to reply. I will update my profile in the near future. x
Hi - I’ve tried a few things for bone pain and have settled on Naproxen and Longtec for pain relief which seems to be working well. I too find heat helps and go to bed with a hot water bottle every night. Also find a walk helps!?! I sometimes find it difficult to distinguish between pain from cancer and pain from drug side effects so I’ve been noting down pain when I’m on/off medication to see if I can distinguish! Jo xx
I am also a fan of hot water bottle heat. I will hopefully see a pain management consultant on Monday as my CT scan of last week revealed a vaginal mass which is causing me severe pain in the pelvic area. At the moment pelvic pain has superseded any bone pain. Thank you for taking the time to reply x
Hi,
I hope appointment went well for you and your pain has eased. I have a large mass - endometriosis which no one has really mentioned but I would think that would cause some of my discomfort so I don’t know whether that is causing me pain or the bones in pelvis/hip. I feel like I can’t tell anymore! I’m going to ask on my appointment at end of week.

Hi Jo6,
I hope you had good results from your appointment.
My pain consultant prescribed Gabapentin and slow release tramadol. The pain in my pelvic area has improved but I do not know if this is due to radiotherapy treatment or the help of pain killers. I am currently on a 10 day 15min sessions of radiotherapy daily treating the vaginal mass, I have treatment 6 today. I am told it will take 4-6 weeks to know if this treatment was effective. I will just have to wait and see how I get on.
Let me know how you are getting on.
Hoper
Hi Hoper- I had a mastectomy with immediate reconstruction a few weeks ago to remove a large breast tumour and have just restarted my tablet chemo again for my bone mets. When I get really sore I find walking helps? Sounds conflicting but it helps me. I have lots of small bone mets so they won’t give me any radiotherapy for any spots as they say its in too many places to pick one or for it to have any real benefit to me. It’s good you’ve got some pain relief. I hope the sessions of radiotherapy go well and they make a difference- hopefully this treatment will be very effective for you! Jo x
