New diagnosis for Ewing sarcoma

Hi everyone,

we just had the news that every parent dreads, our 15 year son has cancer in his pelvis. A lad who played football 3 times a week and is fit and healthy had pain in his leg that was dismissed by the doctors and now been told it's now good... Our heads just can't get used to the idea.

What I really want is some advice on what is the next part to the battle, we have had the MRI and got the diagnosis and been told potentially need to have treatment in Birmingham.

  • Hi,

Welcome to the community though sorry to hear about your son. My experience is more with soft tissue sarcoma since my wife has Leiomyosarcoma though with life deciding to make things more interesting last year our son was diagnosed with a craniopharagonima.

There is a page on the likely treatment options on the main site here and more on the sarcoma uk site here.

As sarcomas are quite rare treatment is often done in a few specialist centres and indeed Birmingham is one of those.

    <<hugs>>

  • Hi there, our son was diagnosed with Ewings Sarcoma 3 years ago.  He had his chemotherapy and radiotherapy at the Christie and surgery in Birmingham.  He has had clear scans now for 2 years and 4 months.  He was 24 at diagnosis.  For him the chemotherapy was awful but others we met had far fewer side effects.
To answer your specific question, our son had kidney, liver and heart tests before starting chemotherapy and also banked his sperm.  He had a line inserted to give the chemotherapy.  He started chemotherapy 2 weeks after he had the call from the biopsy.   It was COVID when he was diagnosed.
    Any questions please just ask.

  • As for the next steps, it’s great that you already have the MRI and diagnosis done. When it comes to treatment, having a second opinion can sometimes help in understanding all the options. It might also be useful to connect with others who’ve been through similar situations sometimes they have tips on how to navigate treatments and take care of yourselves during this time.
