my mum is having her turbt today, she went down to surgery at 330 its now 6 o'clock we are obviously all worried about her not being back yet considering the surgeon said it will be about an hour for the turbt.
I am worried sick, we didnt really know what they saw on the intial CT scan for them to say its bladder cancer.
I am worried sick as she had a chest ct last week and a pelvic mri and we havent heard anything about them, and them the surgeon said to my mum before the surgery today the tumour is large and he will try and remove it all today....we didnt even know the tumour was large.
can I please assume that if there had been signs of spread outside of the bladder we would have had some indication before the turbt today?
Hi, I had my turbt on Tuesday, my surgery took 60 minutes, but I was in recovery for a few hours as I was given the chemo after the turbt.
They had to wait a certain time before starting the chemo and then that had to stay for an hour, and then they had to wait for bot before I could go back up to the ward.
Try not to worry, it took about 30 minutes to get the ward to accept me back from recovery.
I'm sure it will be ok x
Hi , try not to worry on the length of time in the theatre, there are lots of things that can make it longer than you expected. Delayed start, the tumour is large and they will be diligent and careful. then she will be in the recovery room and then getting staff to escort mum back to the ward. I am sure you will be reassured soon , hold tight , sending you some love xx
Much love Angela x
she has just come back from surgery and apparently the surgeon said to her its not looking good and she is stressed out but I am hoping he saying that about the biopsy he has taken
Try not to worry, it's hard but they not to make any conclusions. We just have to wait for the lab results and then start the journey, what ever that may be. Try and stay positive, and try and keep busy, that's what I am trying to do. I know easier said than done, but what else can we do.
Stay strong, I am thinking of you and wish your mother the best. X
Hi, worried daughter. I'm glad your mother came back safely. So I'm going to mention something else. It does take several weeks to get all the reports back from CT and MRI scans as well as biopsies. That's because there are such a lot of scans and tests done and not a lot of specialists to check them and write reports. That information then goes to a Multi Disciplinary Team meeting where the relevant specialist discuss them and plan treatments for each patient. You mum will likely be called in after that meeting to hear what they have found and what they want to do about it. In my hospital the MDT meets once a week on a Friday.
That is to say, the length of time taken to get to that point is not because of their findings, it's because they have a lot of patients. Of course if they believe it is important to act quickly they will.
Please try not to worry about what the doctor may have said, either. You will have more detailed feedback as soon as they can get it to you.
All the best,
Latestart
I know we latch onto every little thing they say in hosp & often read far more into it than they mean - may even mishear, as well. Hopefully she will be given a discharge summary which may enlighten you a little, but really you just have to be patient until the appointment with the consultant to discuss the results and next steps. Hope she recovers well from the TURBT.
thanks! just spoke to the surgeon and he said he believes this is muscle invasive and he couldnt get everything out in the turbt now need to wait for the biopsy.....I feel like my world has just crashed down around me
I'm so sorry you've had that news. It is still treatable - the results they get from all the other tests will help them decide a definitive stage and grade. They will discuss the treatment option(s). There may be some difficult decisions/choices to make. Probably there will someone here who has followed each the available options and can give you a first hand account. Best wishes to you both.
thanks! it was just a quick chat with the surgeon this morning. but all he said to her was we need to wait for the results to come and and decide for chemo and stuff, didnt mention about bladder removal but I assume that is cause it was just a quick chat
Hi worried_daughter . I was in a similar situation. I was in hospital for five days after my TURBT as they had to dig a lot out. I then had a follow up TURBT several weeks later to mop up but in and out in several hours. Given a diagnosis of MIBC. I was put on a six week regimen of chemotherapy and was given that time to decide between removal or chemoradiotherapy. I chose the latter which has so far been good to me 10 years later. Early days for mum. You will know a lot more when the results are in. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.
