Hi there, recovering from first turbt surgery

Greetings all. After 2 ‘urinary infection’ diagnoses in 6 months then another episode, the third GP referred me to Urology on the fast track programme. Had the Turbt on 18th December and was discharged the same day with a catheter. I noticed a lot of blood in the catheter bag quite quickly after getting home and soon was unable to pass water. I called the district nurse who removed the catheter and advised me to go to A&E. At A&E I was in excruciating pain, couldn’t wee and my bladder was full. Was eventually assessed by a urology doctor and given a larger catheter which relieved the immediate distress I was in. A truly torrid experience. I then spent a week in hospital on constant irrigation before being discharged on Christmas Eve.

So over 2 weeks on from the surgery I am feeling somewhat better but constantly guzzling water as I’m still seeing some redness and clotting. I went out briefly for the first time yesterday and was able to comfortably drive my car. Still scared to do anything even mildly strenuous and am worried about drinking coffee (2 a day) and doing anything to worsen my situation. I do vape and apparently than can be detrimental to recovery. I haven’t touched alcohol for over 6 weeks and won’t until I’m fully recovered. So there, I’ve unloaded and feel a little better for doing so. Still waiting for biopsy results and any further treatment plan. I just wish it was a bad knee, elbow or anything else other than my bladder.

Thank you for reading this.

  • Hello  and a warm welcome to this friendly and supportive group. Sorry to hear what you have been through following your TURBT. It is uncommon to have such severe effects. Good to hear you are feeling a bit better. When your results come through a plan will be put in place and you will have something positive to focus on. I hope all goes well going forward. Lots of experiences here so usually always someone with answers or just to chat to. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Thank you so much, I’m 71 and not used to being ill Joy. The last time I was in hospital was over 25 years ago. I do have a supportive partner but I do tend to hide how low I feel sometimes.

  • Hi Zak71, glad things are improving now. I had my one and only TURBT aged 69 and had very few after-effects. It seems like most health-related things we're all different.

Hopefully they get you in soon and tell you what they found and what they propose. Try not to second guess or Google if you didn't get any info before TURBT, there is a lot on the Macmillan site. Though I'd wait and have some feedback from your team first - no use worry over something irrelevant.

Not sure that bladder is a worse place to have a problem than a joint (having had both). But they know what they're doing with both these days. And it's all quite routine in consequence.

    All the best,

  • Thank you for your reassurance, the pre op information gave me the impression that the procedure was ‘routine’ which for many seems to be the case. I am hoping for a positive way forward whist waiting for the next steps. I do worry, less for my own situation but for those around me.

  • Hi Zak71,Welcome to the group.I hope you will find it helpful.Sorry to hear you have had a torrid time since the TURBT.Hopefully things will improve with time.Just be wary of lifting anything heavy for at least 6 weeks while you are healing.Best wishes Jane

  • Hello Zak, I had similar problems with clotting and catheter blockage after the first of my two TURBTs in 2018 and also spent some time in hospital being irrigated because the pink flow was not easing. The 2nd TURBT sorted that out. For various reasons I have had to have a long term Foley urethral catheter ever since. I hope you can be restored to more normal function soon, but it is surprising what you can get used to so try not to worry too much. I'm now 76 and mainly moan about getting old rather than the lingering cancer, except when my catheter gives problems. Forum members will always step in to lift one's spirits when this occurs, so post whenever you feel the need. Best wishes.  Ray

  • Sound advice, many thanks. It’s surprising how heavy a load of washing is …Joy

  • Thank you, the catheter was the worst thing for me. Using that for 7 days whilst hooked up to the irrigation apparatus was a nightmare. It was a larger gauge one that I hope I will never need again.

  • I always mention this as in 1997 I made the mistake of moving some heavy boxes of books a month after a TURBT.I had a bladder haemorrhage and ended up in casualty.

  • I have taken your advice on board, thank you.
