Hi everyone,
Sorry for the long post.
My husband is due to have his TURBT on Wednesday 7th, he's currently on antibiotics to cover him for what appears to be another bladder infection - these will be finished on Monday so hospital said he'll be fine for surgery. He is in pain and can't get comfortable, sleeps on and off all day between wees and has now lost his appetite. So far he's lost a stone, and he really couldn't afford to lose it.
It's killing me to watch. Paracetamol and codeine aren't really doing what they need to but he refuses to ask for anything stronger.
I'm someone who needs to know what we're dealing with so am hoping the follow up appointment, where I assume we'll get the results of the CT scans and TURBT, won't be too long after Wednesday. But I'm scared, I feel like I'm already losing him.
I am trying to stay strong for him, so keep my fears and tears to myself but I don't know how to handle this, and the not knowing. I nag him to drink water, and to eat so that he can take his antibiotics, but otherwise try to let him rest, or move when he manages to force himself up. He has always been an extremely active man so this too is hard to watch.
If what he's going through is normal at this stage, or if any of you have any advice on how I can support him better, please let me know.
Thanks for reading.
Neat
Hi neatie46 and welcome to the group although sorry to hear your husband is in a lot of discomfort. Firstly, be aware that BC can be treated successfully and many of us here have been through it. Good to know he doesn't have too long to wait for his TURBT. Usually a fairly straightforward procedure done in day surgery but prepare for an overnight just in case. Biopsies will be taken and sent off for analysis. Results usually take about two weeks but can take longer. This determines the next step. It will be uncomfortable when peeing afterwards but he should start feeling a bit better after a few days. Important that he keeps drinking plenty of water to flush any debris out. Some people recommend adding a touch of lemon barley to the water to help get it down. Lots of support here so ask anything you like going forward. Best wishes.
Neat, my thoughts are with you both. It’s a very turbulent time, but reading your post know you are a fantastic support for your hubby. The TURBT will be over soon and you will have a better idea of your treatment plan. I, and my wife know exactly what you are going though. Remember BC is treatable - I was diagnosed in Nov 23, and after BCG and surgery am now cancer free, best Leo
Hi neatie46,Welcome to our friendly group.I’m so sorry to hear your husband is suffering. Some of us did lose weight at the start. The TURBT may help with his symptoms as they will remove any tumours. This stage of uncertainty is the worst and we have all been through it and understand the fears.Once the TURBT(S) are done and the results are in people do tend to feel better. You know what treatment is planned and have something to focus on,getting better.Keep posting we are all here to support you both.love Jane x
Don’t beat yourself up if you don’t feel positive all the time. It’s natural to feel many different emotions and it can be even harder for loved ones as they feel so helpless. You are being supportive and I’m sure your husband appreciates this very much.My partner and sister who supported me felt very much more in control once they knew what was happening and could get into practical mode.I’m also cancer free over 5 yrs on from surgery.Love Jane x
Hi neatie and welcome
I was In great pain before my TURBT. I was constantly running to the toilet twenty for seven. After the TURBT procedure it is important for your husband to start taking on fluids straight away on the ward. The urine will continue to be bloody for a while but thus is part of the procedure but will begin to clear after a while. It will be a bit uncomfortable for a day or two but gradually the pain will go away. I began peeing normally again without any pain or blood after about 3-4 days. The biopsy should not take long it will determine the grade and the plan moving forward. I was told my plan about two hours after my TURBT as mine was invasive, but this is not always the case. The good thing is that the TURBT is happening soon and you can plan ahead.
Best wishes
Mark
