Well a couple of weeks ago I had just got out the shower and had a wee, my stream was as red as it come and it was obvious it was blood and a lot of it at that! I'm no stranger to blood in my urine as in march I had a uti which turned in to a serious infection and felt very unwell and I was in hospital for a few days and on antibiotics for 3 months.  Cut back to a couple weeks ago  and presently  I am still urinating  blood intermittently  most days each time undeniably  blood and with no other symptoms. I have been taking antibiotics nevertheless on doctors orders to rule out another uti , but as I work in health care I completed a dipstick urine sample on myself and I know its not an infection(uti) this time and do not think i have any issues with my prostate. I have been referred to urology and have an appointment on the 29th August. I'm not saying I know for definite that it's bladder cancer  but I have a suspicion. I'm only 41 years old  but I'm a recovering Alcoholic and drank heavily for years but have now been sober for 18months, but I feel the years of heavy drinking may have  triggered this current situation. I would like to hear your opinion and your own diagnosis journey's. I'm a resilient person and if it's bad news I will accept it and plan a recovery. If it turns out to be nothing serious then I'll know that I will be more educated in the matters of bladder cancer and other bladder issues. Thank you for your time in advance.

  • Hi Martinvau , i dont have experience or advice that would help you, I just wanted to wish you well. This group is lovely and friendly, I am sure someone will be along soon to answer your questions. best wishes Angela x

  • Hi  and a welcome from me. In many cases there is no obvious reason for bladder cancer. In my case it was down to many years of smoking. Once known as an old man's disease we are seeing more younger people these days. The main diagnosis for BC is a flexible cystoscopy. This is a camera in to the bladder. A painless but sometimes uncomfortable procedure. You will be able to see for yourself on screen anything abnormal . If any abnormal cells are found, the next step would be a TURBT (trans urethral resection of bladder tumour) operation to scrape them away. Usually done in day surgery. They would then put a plan in place to follow up. Lots of us have been through this so lots of experience here to answer any questions. Try not to look too far ahead and just take things one step at a time. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hello martinvau,

Welcome to the group. Sorry to hear about your issues.

I was diagnosed with bladder cancer end of last November early December. 52 year old male.

I also like you try to find reason for the diagnosis. Didn't smoke etc, I was also a heavy drinker back in the day, kept fit etc but we will never really know.

I'm no expert and the terminology on a lot of things still go over my head. I tend to bury my head in the sand and just do as I'm told lol. I did use Google a lot at the beginning, but that didn't really help at all. Thankfully I found this group and the kind people that go out of their way to help.

My experiences so far have been very positive.

3 TURBTs, MRI, CT scan and have started my BCG treatments that will go on for three year's.

My cancer has been removed and after the last biopsy it hasn't returned.

I'm not going to say it's been easy. The processes can be very tiring and the worrying doesn't help for sure, but I must not grumble as I consider myself lucky.

I really hope it goes well for you and if you do get a cancer diagnosis then there are options and it's can be very treatable.

    Kindest regards

  • what a lovely response, a reassuring and honest account of your experience BFG . This is a good group to be in. they have all helped me when i needed it,with kind words and expert knowledge. Angela x

  • Thank you Angela, I appreciate your message. X

  • Thank you Jane, I'll be much happier and more informed when I get more information after my appointment. I know "happier" is a strange word to use in my situation but even if it's bad news I will be happy as it were when I know what I'm dealing with.

  • Yes the waiting and not knowing is hard.People tend to feel better once a plan is in place.Love Jane x

    • Hi BFG, thank you for your message, your more clued up on the lingo than I am lol. I'm glad your having a positive experience as you can have with going through what must be a horrible and stressful situation!  I really have no idea what tests they might do on the 29th as long as it gives me answers I'll deal with anything they throw at me.if you don't mind me asking what we're your initial symptoms, what was it that made you go to your GP etc? Thank you again for your message it was informative for me and led me to read up some more.
    • Hi Rily thanks for your message it was really informative and gave me a lot of terms to check and read up more on just incase I get bad news. I'm the kind of person who prepares for the worst and if it doesn't happen then we'll it's a bonus! I'm not sure if I'd be able to spot an abnormal bladder? Do they inform you there and then if its abnormal or something looks suspicious? I'm just glad my surgery took my symptoms serious enough to refer me quickly and I'm hopeful I'll get some kind of answer. I don't gave too long to wait now thankfully! What were you're first symptoms what led you to consult your GP? Thanks again?
