Tomorrow I have my first cystoscopy after having 6 weeks of BCG treatment and feeling a little apprehensive about it. The thing is I know what to expect from having previous cystoscopy's but struggling with next steps. I've got 3 maintenance BCG treatments in May but what happens then? Does that mean no more treatments and the all clear?
Just can't seem to get my head around the past 7 months since being diagnosed, feel like I'm watching my own life on TV
As I understand it Sassy Girl, if the cystoscopy is clear then what you will get is not an 'all clear' as bc is so prone to recur. But what you will get following a clear cystoscopy, besides the 3x BCG in May, is another cystoscopy in perhaps 3 or 6 months. If it isn't clear tomorrow then they may have another MDT [team] meeting to discuss what's going on and what treatment choices to offer you. That happened to my OH and in his case he chose Mitomycin, which for him has been successful.
Just try to keep busy until tomorrow's done and reported, so as not to dwell on it over-much.
Hi sassy girl I found the 1st cystoscopy I had after my 6 bcg treatments very nerve wrecking as I really didn't know what to expect ..was the bcg treatment working??? I imagined all sorts .. thankfully my cystoscopy was clear and I went on to have more bcg treatments and cystoscopys.. I've had a total of 15 treatments and many cystoscopys over the two and a half years I've been diagnosed in fact I had one yesterday and again it was clear ..I had been anxious about it as I usually am before the proceedure but that seems to be a normal reaction by most people who undergo treatment and check ups for cancer xx I try my best to put it out of my head once the cystoscopy is done and enjoy life to my best ability I really don't want to spend my time worrying and making myself depressed..I am 67 years old married with 2 grown up children and 5 grandchildren from 28 to 9 years old .. good luck with your cystoscopy.. I'll be thinking about you xx love Tina x
I believe the whole BCG schedule used to be maintenance doses at intervals over 2 years (including the original 6weeks). There is controversy as to how essential the follow up doses are, all depends how well the patient tolerates them. Even after ceasing BCG, follow up checks will be important. My surgeon told me that with BCG for high grade BC, 50% patients still need RC in the future.
Wishing you well for a clear result this time.
