Hi all, I'm new here, my dad was diagnosed 2 days ago with bladder cancer, and lung metastasis. We have been told all is inoperable and he is to start cistoplatin chemo in 3 weeks time. From what the doc is saying this will only help to extend his life, and we are devastated but for now we must get our game faces on and get him strong ready for chemo. My major concern right now is he has lost so much weight, is constantly nauseous and constipated. Doc has been to see him last 2 days and over the past week has changed steroid yesterday hoping he will pick up. He currently can only stomach one bowl of ready break/Weetabix per day and then sleeps all day, this is even before he has started chemo:(. Has anyone got any advice for me? Will the steroids take a while to work? what's the best anti sickness? We have 3 weeks to get him right and I'm so worried.TIA xx
Hi Rar Rar and welcome to this supportive group, although sorry to hear about dad's diagnosis. It must be a worrying time for your family. I had CIsplatin as part of my treatment and thankfully didn't have any real nasty effects from it. I also lost a lot of weight prior to diagnosis and was prescribed steroids. The steroids gave me a big appetite and I started putting weight back on. The oncologist should prescribe the correct anti sickness tablets. These need to be taken as prescribed. They are designed to prevent nausea rather than stopping it if it happens. You may need to get some good quality mouth was to use regularly as it helps prevent mouth sores which chemo can cause. I hope all goes well. Best wishes.
Hi Riley,
Thank you so much for the reply, I think I may just be impatient as he's only been on this steroid for 1 1/2 days, I'm not sure how long it will take to kick in but hopefully it will be working soon. It's very worrying that he is struggling now before chemo has even started but I know the docs are on it with the meds and I can see it's a bit of trial and error when suiting the right med to the patient I guess x
Hi again Rar Rar . If your husband is still in hospital, most major hospitals have Macmillan advisors onsite. These can point you to dieticians who can help with dietary needs and the best things to help. Best wishes.
Hi Rar Rar,Welcome to this friendly group.I’m sorry to hear about your dad.Hopefully some better anti sickness drugs should help but you need to get something for the constipation too.It can make you feel sick if you are very constipated and that in turn makes you not want to eat.Best wishes Jane
Hello Rar Rar
my partner was diagnosed with stage 3 muscle invasive tumor in August.
He also stopped eating almost immediately , he has not been offered any steroids, but has had antibiotics time after time,
he is currently at day 9 of 20 radiotherapy treatment.
he has had many days of not eating or very, very little.
he has lost so much weight but he does enjoy jelly with ice with ice cream and the occasional banana..
