Hello Everyone
New here and feeling a bit anxious ahead of a TURBT that is scheduled for Monday . I’ve had blood in my urine since Lockdown but GP kept insisting either that I was imagining it or that it was a UTI . Think women often have their symptoms fobbed off as something else .Eventually had cystoscopy done privately where something that looked like Seaweed (!) was found and I was told it had to come out . It’s taken over 2 months to get the TURBT date on the NHS . I’ve asked for my procedure be done under spinal block as I have an irrational fear of GA . Anyone got experience of TURBT with spinal block ? At cystoscopy the Doctor said he was worried as the tumour was very close to a duct for the kidney and that this might make removing it more complicated - anyone know what this might mean ? How much can they tell about the diagnosis from doing the TURBT ? Or do they need to wait for biopsy? And how do you feel afterwards can you get back to normal quite quickly ? Sorry for all the questions . I am sitting here overthinking . Getting very anxious that it has grown in the months since cystoscopy and worried about all the delays there have been .
Hello SarahCR and welcome to our friendly group. Many of us will know how anxious you will be feeling at the moment. It is not uncommon for ladies to be referred late because many ladies are fobbed off with (excuse the term) lady's problems. The TURBT (trans urethral resection of bladder tumour) is a fairly straightforward procedure. Spinal blocks are uncommon, but several people here have gone that way and may share their experiences. Generally, under GA most people do not get much information after the procedure, but with the spinal block the doctor may give you some info. Saying that, it is the result of the biopsies that determine the next step. It takes a few weeks for results. Whatever the results, if confirmed as bc, then bladder cancer can be treated successfully. Keep us posted and ask as many questions as you like. Many here have been there. Best t wishes.
Hi SarahCR,Welcome to the group. It’s natural to feel apprehensive when it’s all new and unknown. The TURBT will provide some answers as they will take biopsies. The procedure itself is not that bad.Afterwards drink plenty of fluids to keep the bladder flushed out.Take regular painkillers if you are in pain but you may not need them.I used to take it easy for the first day or two after a TURBT.After that I was ok to carry on as usual.I did avoid lifting anything really heavy or doing too much bending for a few weeks while the biopsy sites were healing.I hope you find this friendly forum helpful.Everyone here is supportive.Best wishes Jane
Hi Sarah hope all goes ok for you ..I was in hospital overnight when I had first turbt but was out by lunch time following day .. I had catheter in for few hours after operation but it didn't bother me .. I took some painkillers when I needed but on the whole I was OK..I had spinal block and I think I was so relaxed I slept nearly all way through lol I had my results about 3 weeks later the doctor called me in for appointment...it was CIS early cancer but of high grade ...the doctor advised bcg treatment and so far ive had 15 treatments and flexible cystoscopy every 3 months..thankfully I have so far been clear ...I have a flexi on 29th November and hope all will be okay... try not to let this be the only thing you think of it will surely get you down .. it is hard when we are told we have bladder cancer but we must put our trust in the doctors and do what we are advised xx drinking water is part of my daily regime now I try to drink 2 litres everyday even though the trips to the loo are numerous..take care and keep posting for encouragement and advice it will help you so much love Tina xx

Hello everyone and thank you all for your support for the TURBT yesterday - except I find out on discharge I actually didn’t have one !
So I am back home today and a bit sore but fine but very confused . I had what I thought was the TURBT yesterday under spinal anaesthetic and sedation - I was awake but away with the fairies !
After the operation the surgeon came briefly to see me in the recovery room and I asked if she had got it all out and that I was left with the impression that she nodded or said something reassuring. I let everyone know that it’s all out and just now the wait the biopsy results on 6 th December . Today as I am getting ready to leave I am given a discharge letter by the nurse which says that infact I had a rigid cystoscopy and biopsy taken as TURBT wasn’t attempted because of position of tumour to duct leading to kidney . There was nobody around to talk to and I’ve left the hospital feeling very bewildered and wondering what this means .i knew from my first cystoscopy several months ago that it was in a tricky position but I had talked to the surgeon about that on the morning of the operation and she had reassured me that it was still important to get it out and if necessary a stent would be fitted . I signed the consent form for a TURBT .
why the change of plan and why did nobody discuss this with me ? Does this mean that the tumour is inoperable ? Or do they not want to go ahead before the biopsy is back ? I just wonder what changed there minds . Right now 2 weeks seems along time to wait for any answers .
