Hello it’s been several months since I have posted anything on this forum as I have slowly recovered and began to feel like my old self. At my very worse I found this forum very helpful and supportive. Hope someone out there can help with my current concerns
Update since surgery in March. Told it was a T4 cancer but no evidence of it spreading anywhere.. I had appointment back in May with oncologist who strongly recommended chemotherapy I wasn’t sure my body was up to it as I was still underweight and tired. He examined me and weighed me and said he thought I would cope with chemo. The specialist nurse was also there and recommending chemo. This is chemo that is given within 12 weeks of op and it gives around a 5% benefit. I signed the consent form and agreed I would think about it and let them know. We agreed the chemo would take place at the local hospital 23 miles away and not at the hospital where I had the surgery which is 60 miles away. I did a bit of research that evening and was concerned about timescales as the doctor had said there was no benefit after 12 weeks post op. He said I was still within the 12 weeks whereas I worked out I saw him 10 weeks post op. After talking to the specialist nurse the next day and asking questions I agreed to the chemotherapy. As well as having the chemo locally we also changed the oncologist to a local one. Got an appointment with the new consultant through the post. On the Friday before the appointment with the new consultant I had a call from the sister from the chemotherapy ward at the local hospital. She was lovely she said my chemo could start on Monday long conversation about my concerns and the questions I was going to ask the consultant, she said you don’t need the appointment and suggested I see the new consultant after my first cycle. She listened to my questions which were: should I have the covid booster - she said yes but if I couldn’t get it before Monday it would matter. As we are out of the 12 weeks and I am still underweight (slowly putting weight on) would it be possible to postpone chem for another 2 weeks to enable me to put on a few more pounds? She thought this was a good question and she would talk to the original oncologist and get back to me. Had a phone later from the sister who said she had discussed my questions with the doctor and he decided I should not have chemotherapy! Saw the new oncologist on the Monday who said he fully agreed that chemo would not be beneficial as I hadn’t recovered sufficiently from the surgery . I was confused as I had put weight on since I had seen the first oncologist who strongly recommended it.
Had a CT scan in June, long delay in getting results, they said up to 12 days in the event it was 28 days! No sign of cancer but some indeterminate area which could be scar tissue. Next scan in 3 months. Told oncologist about some pain around genital area, he thinks this is nerve pain.
pain got worse over next few weeks and didn’t seem to respond to painkiller which I was taking more and more of. GP prescribed stronger medication but made no difference. Pain particularly bad when sitting and in the car. Spoke again to oncologist who suggested I speak to urology. I spoke to specialist nurse and to a more sympathetic GP who prescribed strong ibuprofen and some epilepsy medication that helps with nerve pain and it made a big difference still uncomfortable in the car but bearable. Not waking in the night and taking painkillers using a cool pack which works well.
About 4 days ago I developed a pain in my left groin which is awful. I am finding it really painful to walk and gone back to using my stick.
Don’t know if it’s more nerve pain or something unrelated to op
sorry for going on so much but it’s helped to write it all down and if anyone has had similar problems would love to hear from you.
thanks Anita
Hello Spring22 and good to hear from you again. Good to know you are recovering from your big op, but sorry to hear you are having some issues. I've no experience of this, but I am sure someone will be along with some advice. Best wishes.
Welcome back. Sorry to hear you've been in so much pain. I had chemo prior to my op give years ago and thankfully didn't need chemo post op. The op knocks more out of you than you think and chemo too early, in the same way an op before you've recoverd from chemo could have some serious implications. Thankfully your scan is clear and that's a big step forward. Please don't be a stranger
