Hi. I have been having cancer tumours in my bladder for 9 years now. Reoccurring every 6 months. I haveTURBT followed by Mitomicin treatments over 6 to 8 weeks but usually 6 sessions take several months because treatment suspended while side effects sorted.  Specialist now wants to try BCG . Very reluctant after years of Mitomycin  not making much difference other than awful side  effects. What experiences have people had with BCG?

  • Hi and welcome to the group. I had a different treatment so no personal experience of BCG, however, being on here for some time, we know that if one treatment doesn't work, there can be successful out comes with the alternative. BCG is an immunotherapy treatment rather than the Mitomycin which is a chemo treatment. I'm sure others will be along to share their experiences of BCG. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hello L155y and welcome, every treatment has side effects and BCG is no exception. Of course each person can react differently to BCG. Some are more tolerant of it than others but it is a very effective counter to bladder cancer. It is accumulative so the more you have the more it can affect you. My first 6 initial instillations were fine but it started to give me some grief (and still does) once I progressed.

That doesn't mean you will follow the same path as me, they don't always make it evident of the downside to treatment. The main thing is to try and defeat the cancer which so far it has. Do keep all of us posted on how you progress.

  • Hi L155y, I'm halfway through my first six sessions of BCG installations and each one has been different as the effects are different for all of us. After session 1 I had some aching joints as well as the regular urge to pee, the second was more joint aching, lots of clots so exacerbating the need to pee but after 12 hours it subsided and was feeling normal again after day 3 with burning sensation when peeing. Session 3 has been less side effects and managed 5 hours uninterrupted night sleep but the urge to pee every couple of hours returned and lasted over 3 days but no pain peeing this time.
I would say water is your friend and for me it is avoid caffeine, alcohol and citrus fruits as I manage my way through treatment. Everyone is different and will share their experiences of BCG installations.

Take care and look after yourself
