Hi all,
my 86 year old father has recently had diagnosis. He has various comorbidities. At his age best chance was scraping op. Unfortunately hE had heart attack after it. He got home around and of March and a week later started to get bleeding.
we are now coming up to a month post op and still a lot of blood in urine output (hee has catheter) He is extremely frail and tired and hasn’t slept at all well since the operation.
he is on cocktail of pills and now antibiotics as cpr ? level so high in blood that indicates infection.
Has anyone had similar experience? Is this normal? We are hoping to take him on holiday to Cornwall in summer (meaning long car journey) but starting to question if it’s realistic.
desperately sad as prognosis same as before hee had op but his health is SO much worse post op.
wishing you all the best and thanks for any help,
Dear Bird lover 1975, just to say welcome to this most friendly group and sorry to hear about your poor Dad's poor health.. Bleeding after a TURBT [Trans Urethral Resection of Bladder Tumour] is common but If I were the son/daughter I would be on the phone to Urology nonstop till I got some answers.
The bleeding often subsides as the raw scraped area/s scab over, and then recurs around 2 weeks later when the scabs come away, often seen as passing clots plus a bit of fresh blood from the site. Then it would tend to settle down subject to not doing any heavy lifting or the like. So your Dad's pattern doesn't sound right to a mere non medic like me. Wondering did they put him on blood thinners because of the heart attack? That might explain it but there has to be a balance or he could get anaemic from blood loss. This would make him frail and tired.
My take is, don't let the Drs ignore him just because he is old and frail. He and you deserve for them to at least check for causes of these problems and if necessary give him a blood transfusion or whatever he needs.
Another issue is that commonly people get urine infections but the Drs guess what antibiotics to give. If they are not the right ones for the germs he has they will not cure it, so persist in having a sample sent to the lab to identify which exact antibiotic will work.
Meantime try to have him drink as much properly diluted Robinson's Lemon Barley Water as reasonably possible to flush it out. It is quite pleasant warm if this helps. And you could try cranberry tablets, both these will help reduce bugs clinging to the lining of his waterworks.
And have you registered with your local carers' Association? The help you will get does vary according to area but it's worth registering, there could well be local help and support for you.
best wishes,
Denby
