Hello. My husband was diagnosed with High risk Non Muscle Invasive Bladder Cancer 6 months ago. He also has benign prostate enlargement.
He's had tumours removed and started immunotherapy in the summer. After the tumour removal he was unable to empty his bladder so ended up having a catheter in for 9 days.
Following a short break he had 6 rounds of BCG vaccine - a few minor side effects but at the end he felt fine for a couple of weeks. He was unable to empty his bladder fully so has now been self-catheterizing twice a day, but urinates normally in between. 2 months ago he developed a UTI which was treated successfully. Felt fine again for a few days then developed another infection - this time the infection spread to one testicle and he had to see an emergency GP who gave him a different course of antibiotics for 2 weeks. This was extended by another 2 weeks as the swelling in his testicle was not going down. He was more unwell with this than after his op.
That lead to his cystoscopy being postponed for a few weeks. When he did have it they were happy enough although there was a red patch which they said may be due to the BCG or the infection but they will keep an eye on it. The doctor who saw him gave him 3 days worth of antibiotics due to his history.
He started BCG again last week - the first of 3. Went for his second one this morning and they couldn't do it as he has another infection. He said his sample looked cloudy so wasn't surprised. The hospital are going to get the sample checked and should have the results in a few days at which time they'll phone him to discuss what to do next.
Has anyone else experienced recurrent UTIs following surgery and is there anything else we can do to minimise this? He takes every precaution he can when using the catheters and is drinking plenty of water.
Hi Elpie Bee, my husband had same grade/stage/prostate enlargement as yours. Always check with pharmacist before taking alternative products. My old GP told me to ward off early cystitis by drinking properly diluted Robinson's Lemon Barley Water, most of a bottle in 24 hours, this worked really well and many on here also find it helpful. I believe it beneficially affects the pH balance in a way that is anti-infection. I have also saved my husband from any more UTI's after self catheterising had resulted in several, by giving him cranberry tablets. The advantage of these over juice is no sugar, no chemical sweeteners and easy to take, easy to transport, controlled amount of cranberry.
Some people also find it helps to avoid certain foods, tomatoes and citrus are often irritant as well as of course, caffeine in tea and coffee. If going 'cold turkey' on caffeine expect headaches, or cut down gradually. Sweets aren't great as sugar can feed the bugs.
Hope these may be helpful.

I hope the lemon barley helps. You could always ask for another urine sample to be sent off.I picked up a hospital acquired infection after a TURBT procedure and it took 3 lots of antibiotics to get rid of it.The lab didn’t find it the first time around but a second sample detected it after several days.Best wishes Jane
