Mitomycin treatment

Hello, I’m new here so not sure where to start! I was diagnosed with low grade bladder cancer in January 2020 and had two tumours removed (one 3cm and one 1cm). Although it was low grade, the fact that there were two meant that it was recommended I should have a 6 week course of Mitomycin as a follow up. Unfortunately, the first lockdown began the same week the treatment should have started, so it was cancelled. I completely understood the need for this and didn’t have a problem with it. To cut a long story short, a cystoscopy six months later was clear and a further one was promised six months after that, which would have been last January. In fact that never happened and I wasn’t called back until August this year, when another small tumour was found and subsequently removed with a TURBT procedure in September. I was really disappointed the cancer had come back, but again it was found to be low grade, which is hugely reassuring. It has now been decided that I should have the course of Mitomycin.starting this week. I’d be really grateful to hear from anyone who has had this treatment who can let me know what to expect. The treatment should end the week after Christmas and my son’s family, which includes three fairly young grandchildren, were hoping to come and stay for a few days over Christmas, but are now wondering if they should cancel. I’m very hopeful that I’ll be feeling fine, but would really appreciate hearing advice from anyone who’s been through it.

  • Hi and welcome to the group. Sorry to hear of your recurrence, but we know it does happen. Good to know you have had it cleared and are about to start mytomycin. I went a different route, so no help there, but I am sure others who have experience of this and also BCG which is administered in the same way should be along to help. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

Ah that’s great to hear Clifton! Thanks so much.

  • Hi Jernogirl,

I had a 3cm low grade tumour removed March this year followed by a six week course of Mytomycin.  Had a follow up three months later where they discovered another small growth, pea sized which was another low grade cancer.  Have just completed a further six week course of Mytomycin.          Mytomycin chemo doesn't affect you in the same way that chemotherapy into your blood stream.  It is in your bladder for an hour and then you go to the toilet and get rid of it naturally.  I only suffered a little discomfort when they put the catheter in to administer the Mytomycin and that is all that I have suffered during both courses of treatment.  So here's hoping you have as little trouble as I have during your treatment.

    Kind regards RN STOKER

Really appreciate you getting back to me, RN Stoker. Good to know you had no real problems with the Mitomycin. How disappointing for you though to have to go through this twice. I hope the second course will clear it up for you once and for all. I’m kind of reconciled to the possibility that I too may experience recurrences again. It seems like bladder cancer is a pesky so-and-so that does tend to come back uninvited!

  • Thanks for your kind thoughts.  The positive thing is that they have found the tumours and are trying to prevent it becoming a real problem for both of us.  The treatment hasn't stopped me from doing any of the activities that I normally do and enjoy

That’s good to hear. After my first two were found and removed, and then the chemo was cancelled during lockdown, I went into total denial mode and tried to forget all about it. It came as a bit of a shock when they spotted another one back in August. But you have a very sensible and positive attitude to it which I’ll try to adopt as well. Thank you!

  • Your more than welcome.
