Hi Everyone

I was diagnosed with non-invasive high grade 2 bladder cancer last month. I've had a turb and started my BCG treatment last week. I went for a scan this morning and they found another 1cm tumour. I'm a bit shellshocked and really wonder what that means.

  • Hi and welcome to the group. Sorry to hear another tumour has appeared. It is not uncommon as we know bladder cancer has a habit of recurring. Usually a follow up TURBT may be needed to remove it. If only very small, a diathermy may be all that is needed. This is just like a quick laser blast. They should then review your treatment. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi NathS,Welcome to the group.I hope you will find plenty of advice and support here,we are a friendly bunch.Best wishes Jane

  • Thank you, Rily. It's only 1cm from what the sonographer said. I'll ask my clinical team about the laser blast. I'm just concerned that they're going to have to alt treatment and the tumour will grow. It's only been 4 weeks so I'm quite shocked.

  • My husband had a TURBT, 6 weeks BCG, 6 weeks for bladder to settle, then at cystoscopy they found another papillary tumour already grown. I don't honestly know the size of it, anyway he chose the offered switch to Mitomycin and hasn't had any further recurrences; now down to 6 monthly checks. So you see it may not be all doom and gloom , try to take a few deep breaths, get stuck into doing something you enjoy to distract yourself, and they will soon have the little pest gone. For many people the BCG is like weedkiller on a path, you just have to keep retreating it when another weed pops up....

  • Thank you, Denby. The treatment I've been prescribed is BCG and EMDA MMC (which is Mitomycin-C, says the leaflet I've been given) so I'm assuming they'll carry on with that unless they decide to blitz the bugger. I've got to finish an essay this weekend for my Master's module so that's keeping me busy although it's slow going because I can't focus too well! I'll get it done!

  • NathS

Ooh, what are you studying if that's not an unduly nosy question? Happy typing anyway,

Btw I have not heard before of people getting given BCG and  MMC so that's interesting.

  • Doing MAODE (Master of online and distance education) with the OU. I've just asked for a discretionary postponement for one of my last 2 modules. I don't think it's feasible for me to churn 2 end of module assignment by the 16th. I'll submit 1 Monday morning and do the other one when I can actually concentrate. The MMC is the one where they use electrodes to diffuse the Mitomycin. Apparently, it's more effective.

  • Thanks NathS. so many different ways to make treatments better. My husband's Mitomycin started off as being heated and delivered by a circulating pump device. But his bladder firmly said NO, could not tolerate it at all.[ejected it pronto!]. So consultant said to the nurses try it cold [room temp] instead. He still could not hold it for the intended time and this got worse week by week. But it has worked despite these reductions to what they wanted to do to administer it.

Hope the OU are understanding and grant your extension. Your subject sounds very topical with everything by zoom.  MS teams etc

  • Hi NathS, "Grade 2" is not "high grade" ... Grades are 1 2 and 3. 1 is low, then medium is 2 and high is 3. So, non invasive, grade 2 stand a really VERY good chance of being completely treated with BCG. The reoccurrence as other said is normal and 1cm is really little ... This is just a hiccup. You will do more BCG and with most probability it will not progress (become worse).
So, given that bladder cancer (if caught in time) is one of the most curable cancers, given that you had not the best, but second best type and grade (non-invasive, grade 2) I'd say that you can go out and buy a bottle of champagne!

    Best of luck!
