Hi I was given my cancer news about 3 days ago, I’ve been told it’s muscle invasive bladder cancer. Can any one give some advice or information on it please

  • Hi and welcome to the group, although sorry to hear your diagnosis. It may be muscle invasive, but can usually be treated successfully one way or another. I was muscle invasive 8 years ago. Treatment is generally bladder removal or radiotherapy. Lots of experience here in both methods. Have you had a TURBT yet? Feel free to ask any questions. Best wishes.

  • Hi riley

thank you for getting back to me. No I won’t hear anything till Tuesday next week when they have their meeting . No I haven’t what is TURBT? I’ve been having really bad sickness is this something that normally happens?

  • Hi ClaireN21, It's a big shock to hear you have cancer, sorry to hear that you have joined the club. A TURBT is an operation to remove cancer tumours in the bladder. It's often the beginning of a treatment process for some types of cancer, it depends really on what your cancer prognosis is. Have you heard from your doctors about your cancer type or a treatment plan?

  • Hi . TURBT as described above by Sunrise75. Biopsies are taken and the results determine a stage and grade and also treatment. Can I ask how you were diagnosed as you don't usually find out until biopsy results. Best wishes.

  • No I had went in with a blocked kidney and when they doing the camera into bladder they seen area of bladder which was thicker so decided to take a biopsy which came back as cancer. I haven’t spoke to any specialist yet to talk about treatment. I don’t have any symptoms and nothing was obvious on the scan I had, so it did come as a bit of shock.

  • Hi Claire. It happens often when bladder cancer is detected in an indirect way looking for something else. Bladder cancer does not always present obvious symptoms. The most common is blood in urine, but not always. A TURBT is usually the first step. A routine op, similar to the camera, but under general anaesthetic. Usually day surgery or an overnight stay. We understand the early days of uncertainty and not knowing can be anxious times. The positive is it has been detected and will be treated. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Well, whatever the prognosis is, rest assured someone here has probably had something similar, so you've come to the right place and you're certainly not alone! ;-) Do you know when you are next speaking to your specialist?

  • Hi Sunrise75

no not yet! The doctor who gave me the news wasn’t the best at explaining it so I tried to speak to my own consultant at the hospital but she wasn’t available and the head cancer nurse explained to me it would be after the meeting which is Tuesday so hopefully next week at some point I should have more details. Just a long wait from being told the bad news to getting the next bit of info.

  • Welcome to the group ClaireN21,I hope you don’t have to wait too much longer. The waiting is never easy but things usually feel better once you get a treatment plan.Love Jane

  • Hey! I know the waiting isn’t great at all, I’ve been reading up on muscle invasive bladder cancer trying to piece together what is ahead for me
