Hello. I am new here. I would like to ask some advice for my Dad. He has bladder cancer and left it longer than he should have to deal with it. He is due to start radiotherapy next week, if he makes it. He is urinating very frequently (every ten to fifteen minutes) and said it burns so badly that he is 'silently screaming'. Is this normal please? He had an operation to remove the tumours but they found more in the bladder wall. I am ringing the doctor again tomorrow to try and persuade her to come out. Thank you, Emma

  • Hello  and welcome to the group, although sorry to hear your Dad is experiencing discomfort. Although there may be other causes, this sounds very much like a UTI (water infection). You do need to contact the GP and they will probably need a wee sample. Lots of experience and support here to answer any questions you may have. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

    Hello Rily,

Thank you for your very kind reply. It was reassuring to see what you have put and it has equipped me better to talk to the doctor. I really appreciate that you have taken time from your evening to answer my question. I feel welcomed by you. Thank you again, very much.

  • Hi Emma and welcome from me too. As well as likely antibiotics or even if he doesn't get them, two things you can do. If you buy some Robinsons' Lemon Barley Water and dilute it properly, get him to drink lots, it will assist in flushing everything through. And cranberry tablets have some property that also discourages bugs from sticking to the lining setting up infections. If slightest doubt check with pharmacist or medics. Cranberry juice is a double-edged sword as it usually has either sugar which serves to feed bad bugs, or sweetener that is chemicals that might or might not be healthy. The tablets don't have sugar or sweeteners.

    Best wishes,

Good Heavens, you folks are marvellous! The only thing I wish is that you hadn't had the problems in the first place in order to find solutions, if that makes sense? Thank you too Denby for this wonderful advice. These are bits of information I have never seen anywhere else. I thank you sincerely for your assistance. I feel very well informed.

  • We have my old GP 40 year ago to thank for the Lemon Barley tip. As a young woman I went with the start of cystitis [UTI] noticing it early as I had had it a year before [before moving there] and didn't want a repeat of the miseries. Bless him he told me to "buy a bottle and get through it properly diluted in the next 24 hours, I don't think you will need the antibiotics but if you do, come back and I will give them to you then". I did not need them!.

I got onto the cranberry tablets for my husband [he's the one in remission from bc] as he had UTIs several times after being told to self catheterise due to urethral strictures. he hasn't had any more infections.

Hope your dad feels better soon.

Sometimes these forgotten remedies are the best. We rely too much on modern medicine and yes, sometimes it's necessary but occasionally it's good to go back to basics. Thank you again Denby for all your help
