Bladder cancer

Kiko here.

I’ve had 2 TURBT’s snd a six week BCG TREATMENT for non-invasive bladder cancer.

I’m now waiting to have a cystoscopy to see if treatment is working.

Tumour was large and very aggressive so there is a possibility I may require surgery.

Can anybody in the forum tell me if they have had a bladder made from a piece of small intestine or, indeed, had a stoma.

Just want to be prepared for what I may need to face.

  • Hi, just happened to be passing by! I had the reconstruction (neobladder) almost 10 years ago. Both options have pros & cons but you get used to what you have. It is a major op & takes months to fully recover, but plenty of us here have been through it. Is there anything particular you'd like to know?

Should this be the route you need or choose to take, I'm sure your consultant will explain fully. There may be other options to consider if BCG hasn't worked. Hopefully you'll get some immediate feedback from the cysto - you never know, it could be good news.

  • Hi Kiko. Good to see you managed to get your post up here. Once you get your results, then you will have a better idea of which way you are going and always someone here to help with any questions. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi Kiko

I have a stoma (Basil) and personally,  the stoma route was best for me. Basil and I have been together for 16 months. He is very user friendly and if I can manage, anyone can.

He is my best friend and in the circumstances I am so grateful for him everyday

Recovery can be slow but don't be hard on yourself.  It is after all, a major operation.

  • Hi Inanna

Dies the stoma affect how you wear your clothes?

    Does  the bag need to

be emptied frequently and does it fill up quickly or show under clothes when full?

These are practical considerations but not the most important.

    Thank you for your advice.

  • Hi Kiko

    No to all your questions.

I tend to empty Basil's bag every 2 hours but you will get to know when you need to empty the bag, just keep checking it every so often

    Hope this helps
