Hi I've recently had a return of bladder cancer after 18months.  Its low stage one this time whereas before it was high grade 2 as it was picked up quickly on cystoscopy.  I will shortly be starting a 6 week course of  mytomycin chemotherapy into the bladder.

Has anyone else had a similar experience.

Hi Caz56, Welcome to the group but sorry to hear that your cancer has reoccurred after 18 months.

I had 4 reoccurrences in a 14 month period, the last in 2019 and had  a six week course of mitomycin after the last reoccurrence.

It’s a very painless procedure, the mitomycin is inserted by a small flexible catheter and is over in 5 minutes. You then have to retain the liquid for an hour afterwards. I just felt tired towards the end of the six weeks but apart from that no side effects.

I’ve been clear since then and am now checked every six months. I know the cancer may still reoccur but it’s reassuring being checked regularly.

    Best wishes Luce

Thanks for replying. Its reassuring to know that the procedure is painless and doesn't have any side effects as I was s bit worried.

Good luck with your checks and hope you stay clear.

  • Just want to let you know that my husband also had mitomycin after having a recurrence straight after first 6 BCG. He found it increasingly impossible to retain for the hour as the weeks went on, but it has still been successful. In some units it is given heated by a heating pump gadget, as this is thought to add to the effectiveness. However my OH had to have his cold as his bladder just kicked it straight back out when they tried the heated version. But he is currently clear and next check not for 6 months. So very encouraging hopefully.

  • PS, do follow strictly the instructions about washing etc as Mitomycin really burns outside skin should any get on there.
