Muscle injuries and joint issues following BCG

Hi All! A week ago I finished my BCG induction course (6 treatments over as many weeks). First 3 treatments had no issues but then started to feel more fatigued and bladder soreness. Last 2 more bladder pain and also blood in urine for a day or two, and longer lasting fatigue that ran into the next treatment. I know this is all to be expected. However, one thing I've also noticed is increasing stiffness, muscle and joint pain everywhere - lower back, hips, knees, ankles, neck, etc. I'm a keen runner and indoor  rower and I find these activities actually help with the fatigue. However, I've had to stop in the last 2 weeks because I've had bad muscle strains develop when exercising, even when taking it very easy. Now all I can do is walk everywhere, which is fine, but I really miss the higher intensity cardio. I understand joint an muscle issues can be a side effect, as a result is systemic inflammation induced by BCG. I expect this will calm down over a few weeks but then I start maintenance doses in July then again later in the year, then every 6 months until I finish 27. I worry that this will cumulatively put me in a more or less permanent state of inflammation such that I won't be able to run again. I have a physio who's been really helpful in giving me isometric exercises etc to keep flexible etc but I feel like it's a losing battle. I wonder if prescription NSAIDS might help (OTC ibuprofen does nothing), or something else? Would welcome advice from anyone in a similar position!

  • Hello, I cannot comment from direct experience because my treatment did not include BCG, but I've been on the forum for nearly 2.5 years and have seen posts from others who have made similar comments when enduring BCG. It can be a long haul and different patients will react differently. One strong advantage that you have is your pre-BCG fitness. You may have to moderate your exercise regime for a while so that you do not feel too exhausted - this in itself can be demoralising. Although walking has not got the intensity that you desire and were/are capable of, it does help to maintain fitness. Just doesn't give quite the same 'buzz' Grinning.  Ask your cancer team for their advice regarding control of inflammation and soreness/pain induced by the BCG. They will have your full case notes and may be able to prescribe something that helps. Good luck and best wishes for a fit future.  Ray (76 and knackered).
