i have been booked for radical cystectomy. they tell me that they dont think chemo, radiotherapy or BCG would work, and they dont want to delay. i really not keen on such a life-changing, irreversible operation, but does not seem to be much choice. Interested to know if anyone else has similar experience. Diagnosed as T3aN0MX, 6cm tumour, with urinary retention and loss of sensation to void. Catheter in for now. Many thanks.
I am also to have radical cystectomy with chemotherapy starting next week. The surgery does not bother me in the slightest. There may be some minor adjustments to your lifestyle but it does not mean you can't live a full and eventful life.
I am a score of years younger than yourself and I can understand your apprehension but in the end it will be worth it.
Stay positive.
Mark
Hi Ararat,Welcome to the group.I was T3b apparently weeks away from being T4 with Squamous cell.I was told chemo, and radiotherapy were not options.I wasn’t offered BCG presumably due to bladder damage from over 30 years of Interstitial cystitis. The cystectomy has saved my life.I had the surgery in 2019 and live well with a stoma.Prior to the op I was in extreme pain as the tumour was causing an obstruction and it was very difficult to pass urine.I kept getting urinary infections because of this.I don’t regret having my bladder removed. It is a major surgery but it is possible to have a good life afterwards. You will be well supported in this group.Feel free to ask questions as there is usually someone here who can answer.Best wishes Jane
Hi Ararat
I had a radical cystectomy 20 months ago and I’m doing really well -back to doing all that I did before surgery and more.
I shall be 80 in a few months’ time and looking forward to having lots of new and exciting experiences!
One big bonus for me is not having to get up through the night to go to the loo.
Good luck also to Mark for his forthcoming surgery.
You will get a heap of good advice and support from all on this site.
To Jane, I hope all goes well for you and I shall always remember the wonderful encouragement and advice you gave me pre surgery.

These days, you should expect a good few more years yet. If you are otherwise in good health and enjoying life, I think you will find that the surgery is well worth while. They will not offer it if they don't think you can cope.
It is a major undertaking and will take some months to fully recover, but you will soon get used to new plumbing. It may even be liberating compared with your current state. Hope all goes well.
