CT Scan

I had my 1st CT Scan today. Has anyone else had an issue with diarrhoea  after this procedure. Maybe it was just something I ate, but maybe it was the iodine dye that they put through me before  the procedure?

  • Hi Jane S23

I had a bad reaction after my CT scan to the dye but it took about 24 -48 hours to come out. It was a pin prick rash all over and it was very itchy. It was treated with piriton and persisted for around 2-3 weeks. It didn't have any other effects.

Maybe it is worth mentioning it to your doctor in the am.

  • Thank you Jane.

It seems to have settled down now  so fingers crossed.

Poor you, the itching definitely sounds worse.

  • Hi  . We know the contrast dye can cause stomach upsets in some people. As Jane says, contact the medics if it continues or gets worse. In the meantime, drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Best wishes.

    Best wishes to All,   rily.

  • Hi

Had my scan yesterday (have had so many, I can't remember the number Joy), never had any side effects. However, it isn't uncommon and it can happen to vetrans like me, despite the number of previous  uneventful scans.

If you have to have.any further scans, and that's likely, make sure you mention the effects. Glad to hear you'te feeling better.

  • Thank you Rily. I have had a dull, throbbing pain through the night and this morning, so have been drinking plenty to flush it through.

I appreciate the advice you give Rily. It's reassuring.

    Much love

  • Thanks Ian. I'm a terrible worrier. Thank you for taking the time to reply. I'm drinking lots of water to try and flush it out.

  • I hope it settles soon Jane.I’m very allergic to the dye and came out in huge wheals immediately.I remember I had to catch the bus home and it was packed. As everyone backed away I shouted out it’s an allergic reaction I’m not contagious and someone gave up their seat.It took a few days for the hives to go down and the itching to stop.I was ok with dye used in MRI but cat scans use Iodine based dyes. The radiographer was explaining when I was supposed to have a cat scan last year.Love Jane.x

  • Yikes! That sounds awful. What happens if you need another CT Scan. Can they give you something to stop the reaction?

    Love Jane xx

  • I have non contrast scans.I didn’t know I was allergic to Iodine when I had that reaction.I hope you are finding this group helpful.Love Jane xxx

  • It can be done without the contrasting fluid
