Hi this will be 3 weeks today now from me having a turbt, when does the pain in the bladder subside generally? I’m going to assume having constipation probably doesn’t help?? But this is really uncomfortable and is getting me quite down at the moment as I thought this would ah e subsided by now, plus I’m starting 6 weeks of mycontin on the 1st which reading some comments on here will irritate the bladder as well???

  • Morning Peter, sorry you are still suffering since the TURBT. The big question is are you drinking plenty of fluids? We all experience different levels of pain and soreness, for some it lasts longer than others but as you say constipation (frequently caused by anaesthetics) definitely doesn't help. Someone on this site was advised by a GP to try drinking lemon barley as a soother of bladder sensitivity, and even 8 years after my diagnosis and 4 all clear years I still glug away at my litres of lemon barley. Hope your biopsy results are as good as possible? Sending love Hx

  • Hi thanks for responding, yes I’ve got stage 2 intermediate so it was caught before it went into the muscle, the issue I’m having is constipation which is then putting pressure on my bladder, so I. Feel sore, maybe it’s just me but I was hoping I wouldn’t feel like this after 3 weeks or is it too early and I’m being silly???

  • Hello Peter, as Herothedog indicated there are many factors which can affect a patient's recovery from pain after a TURBT. The constipation will not help. Have you been given advice from Urology or a GP on how to ease that problem? A pharmacist may be able to help if trying to access busy GPs/Urology doctors is difficult. Having a good fluid intake may also help. Water or the oft recommended lemon barley water are better than beer or coffee as the perhaps more pleasurable beverages tend to irritate the bladder. I recall that after my first TURBT in 2018, the pain felt more like internal bruising than bladder soreness. It took at least 3 weeks before I could stop taking painkillers. Recovery after the 2nd TURBT the same year seemed more rapid. Best wishes for your future treatment. We will endeavour to provide moral support and try to point you in the right direction based on our experiences but you will find that there's no set path despite others having apparently similar diagnoses. Always consult your Urology team or GP rather than Googling or suffering in silence. Good luck!   Ray

  • My cancer was stage 2 high grade but as you say not in muscle which is key.  Hold on to that. Any treatment is likely to cause irritation but hopefully alongside that it will mean your immune system wipes out the cancer. It isn’t painless but I just learned to go with how I felt after treatments. Rewarded myself with cake and junk tv for being brave Laughing and here I am 8 years later. One step at a time. Xxx

  • So how do you manage the pain itself then? When I came out after the turbt I got nothing, no advice about potential issues during the healing process and I’ve been taking paracetamol but early on it barely scratched the surface

  • Hi Peter, were you introduced to your Cancer Nurse Specialist? My CNS can be telephoned anytime during week day woorking hours and if not available will always get back to me. She's my first port of call when I have a problem. You could try alternate paracetamol and ibuprofen as a short term fix maybe?

  • Hi Peter,I’m sorry you are still in pain following your TURBT.Some are worse than others. If several biopsies are taken that can make healing slower.I used to find a hot water bottle over the bladder helped with pain. It’s always worth getting a urine sample sent off to check for infection if pain persists as infections are common post TURBT.Constipation won’t be helping. My mother used to swear by prune juice for it.Fluid intake is important to lessen the bladder irritation. It’s no fun urinating a lot but the bladder gets more irritated if you don’t drink enough.Make sure you don’t lift anything really heavy for about 6 weeks.I once made the mistake of moving some weighty books a month post TURBT and ended up in casualty with a bladder haemorrhage.I hope the pain eases soon.Best wishes for your forthcoming treatment.Jane

  • Good morning Peter, hope you are feeling better. After TURBT there is passing of blood clots and the debris from the procedure, this can be some time after and is not always mentioned and can come as a surprise. You haven’t mentioned this but it’s all part of the process. I also proceeded to 15 mitomycin and am pleased to report no side effects, regards, John.
