Hi
I have just started mitomycin treatment , just wondering are there any benefits or downside of holding the mitomycin in as long as possible ??
Hi Alpacino, as far as I know aim for as long as your medical team have said. The thing is it is a very caustic ['burning'] chemical. So if you were to hold it longer I guess you may get more severe irritation after, which is not a good thing. That said it irritated my husband's bladder so swiftly he was seldom able to keep it in for as long as they said. Nevertheless he has been cancer free for 3-4 years, though dealing with a recurrence atm as people so often do.
Hope that helps,
Denby
My partner started it for the max time of 2h 45m and it made him very poorly but only for a few days. He then had 2 lots in one day of 2h each and although this made him very very ill it seemed to kick it up the butt and it shrank from almost 8cm to 5cm. They were then able to remove most of it, he had his last session on Monday. There is 7mm left in there that doesn’t appear to be growing or shrinking so they are keeping a very close eye on him, he was only having 45 min at a time towards the end, I think he had about 8 sessions over 6 weeks and they’ve said he needs a break now. But trying to keep it in longer does appear to have worked for him.
all the best x
