BCG and PSA?

Hi,

I’m a 50 year old man and finished 3 years of BCG treatments for T1HG CIS just before Christmas. NED and very relieved.

But all of my male relatives on my father’s side have had prostate cancer (often in their 40’s) so my PSA is checked regularly. It went from 0.50 to 1.8 after I started BCG but has now more than doubled in a few months. It’s now at 4, which above the normal range and well above my normal.

i suppose this isn’t the right forum to ask about prostate cancer but I wonder if anyone has experience of whether BCG can cause such a steep rise in PSA. My last treatment was mid-December.

Any thoughts or experiences would be very welcome!

Many thanks

  • Thanks Alex - the urologist treating the bladder cancer did the prostate biopsy and I thought he would probably do the consultation - I guess the fact it's someone else suggests it probably isn't good news as he is probably a prostate specialist as you say. We will just have to wait and see what he says. Thanks for your good wishes. It seems very bad luck if it is as he is relatively young (56). I've only just got used to dealing with the bladder cancer.

Botox sounds an interesting treatment for your bladder- I know they do use it for medical purposes - I think it has been used to help with female bladder issues with success so hopefully will make life better for you. Fingers crossed.

  • Hi Catfan,It’s not uncommon to see other members of the urology team.I didn’t remember the urologist I saw on the day of diagnosis. It was later when I realised that he had assisted my urologist in the theatre. He looked different in scrubs.Best wishes Jane

  • Thanks Jane - I know I am overthinking. The thing that has thrown me a bit is that this doctor isn't listed on the urology team for the hospital but perhaps he is a locum. I know when my partner was due to have his first rigid cystoscopy  it was rebooked three times with different doctors so they do change them around. I am not reading too much into it being a phone call as they told him the original bladder cancer diagnosis by phone too. I know some people think that bad news is only given face to face,  but not in my experience. Best Wishes.

  • Before I had cancer I was regularly treated by a trust grade urologist whose name wasn’t listed on the main urology team.I did get letters with his name on though. The pandemic has messed things up too.I’m still waiting for my uro phone appt which was due last Nov/Dec.Best wishes Jane

  • Thanks Jane - that's helpful to know. I will say that we have been quite lucky not to have been too much affected by the pandemic - diagnosis was just over a year ago so things were not as bad as during that first wave and lockdown. I hope you get your consultation soon and all continues to go well for you.

  • Best wishes to your partner.I’m in the system for my phone appt apparently but the hospital is behind due to Covid.I’m cancer free so far since bladder removal in 2019.Love Jane

  • That is wonderful to hear - wishing you all the very best going forward x

  • Just wanted to share some good news - partner had the phone call today and the prostate biopsies are clear! He has granulamatous prostatitis due to BCG treatment. PSA is normal too. Such a relief. They don't want to do the final BCG treatments which I guess is a worry but he has had 12 and no recurrence in just over 12 mths. Next stop will be a rigid cystoscopy in May. I am just going to enjoy some good news and a break from the hospital.

  • Hooray,I’m very pleased for you both.Love and best wishes Jane xx

  • Thanks so much Jane - the waiting has been hard but the relief is huge.

Love and very best wishes to you too xx
