Hi everyone, well got my RC Op on 25th August I am isolating at moment  its feels like a lonely road we travel, must admit getting a bit scared now its getting nearer, as i worry I will not make it through the surgery, did others feel this way as well when you had it done?

I know afterwards its gunna be a long time in recovery,  but when do you start to feel more like yourself? Its hard to talk with family about it as they get upset,  any advise welome

  • Feeling apprehensive is perfectly normal. I know when they tell you all that can go wrong, it sounds scary, but I comforted myself with the fact that I was going into it fit & well, whereas some Px are much older & more frail.

While I was still in hosp, I felt quite relieved that I still felt like me - no sense of being changed although obviously I was physically a bit different. Unbelievably weak & tired, but even during the first week, I could see improvement day by day, although there can be dips & setbacks along the way. I guess starting to feel more normal in terms of strength & activity was a gradual process as I resumed ordinary day to day tasks etc. Emotions can be fragile for some time, with unexpected ups & downs. Around 6 weeks post op I started going out to leisure activities but carefully paced. All in all it was about 8 months before I was doing all usual activities without feeling fatigued at the end of the day.

The day itself will pass in a flash as you will of course sleep through it all. Very best wishes.

  • Hi Teasswill, thanks for that, just got to stay positive, you all help such alot with the talks and info, I'm sure I will be ask you all again for advise.

  • Hi Amelia 55, had my RC op in April, I was apprehensive before I went in, but not scared, I knew I was in the best place and the excellent nursing staff looking after me,never had a general anaesthetic before but everything went well, I was in 10 days, sore when I came out, but each day that passed could see a little improvement,, only small but still there, taking short walks and building my energy up, hoping to go back to the gym soon, everyone is different in their recovery ,you just go at your own pace and just take one day at a time , will be thinking of you, take care and best wishes Margaret x

  • Hi Amelia55, my dad is currently recovering from his RC which he had on Monday this week.  He remains in ICU but that is due to lack of beds on a surgical ward! Although he has had excellent care andRoflattention in ICU and I would be happy for him to stay there until discharge! My dad was worried about the op and very nervous and emotional on the day of the surgery, which is totally understandable The day of the surgery was a very long day for us waiting at home for news.  My dad went down at 8am and the consultant rang at 6.30pm to say all was done and had gone well (apparently they had started late!) .  My dad phoned my mum and me that evening, although very groggy it was reassuring to hear from him.  I would say he is recovering as expected, day 2/3 he was a bit emotional as he wanted to be feeling better (no patience!).  He is feeling a bit better each day, mainly tender from the wound as it was not done by keyhole.  He has changed his own bag and is slowly getting used to his new friend! he is now just waiting to open his vowels for the firstime post surgery , he is frustrated that he hasn't manged it yetRofl

I wish you all the best for the surgery and just be kind to yourself.  Slow and steady wins the race xx

  • Thankyou Margben, its so encouraging to hear from others who have been through it, and making a steady recovery.

  • Thankyou SP33, Im glad to hear you dad is ok and all went well with the surgery, yes men have no patience have they ha ha, but at least he wantig to get up and about and eager to get well, I bet your mum is relieved.

Its make me less nervous to hear from other that are recovering.

Onwards and upwards and I wish you dad a speedy recovery.
