Hi all, had 2 cycles of chemo neo adjuvent and now awaiting RC.

My last chemo was on 12 May, got to wait till 15 Of July now to see my Urologist to discuss the RC

is it normal to wait this long? How long after this meeting will I have the surgery? It seems a long time to wait  and I worried the cancer is going to spread.

Appreciate some advise

  • Hi, I guess 'normal' is variable - depends on particular hosp protocol, how busy they are etc. I think they usually like to give you some recovery time from the chemo before doing RC. As patients, we are always keen to get on with treatment, but sometimes matters are not as urgent as we think.

I recall chafing at delay & being told it would have been sooner if more urgent, but I would have had less choice. Waiting time for surgery after the consult also varies between hosp.

Take the time to recuperate & relax before the next step pf the journey. Best wishes.

  • Thanks can understand 6-8 weeks after chemo but time I seen him and then arrange surgery it could be12 weeks which does worry me as I a  stage 3

  • Hi Amelia55,I had my cystectomy at Southmead hospital in Bristol. It was classed as urgent so I waited 3days short of a month. They had to find a bed in intensive care or high dependency for care straight after the surgery. This is usual because it is major surgery. The waiting is never easy but the chemo will have helped to reduce the chance of spread.Love Jane

  • Amelia55 I understand your concern. My husband’s RC is 6 weeks after the end of 3 cycles of chemotherapy and I thought that was long enough (in my non medical opinion) and I was pushing for earlier (easy for me to say!). Speak to your CNS or consultant if purely for peace of mind. I think it’s a very reasonable question.  Maybe you’ve responded really well to the chemotherapy or need a bit more time for recovery. Or maybe it’s for logistical reasons  Good luck
