Cystoscopy

Hi,

I have had to cancel my cystoscopy appointment. I had booked it at the Spire Hospital but they have told me as I have an allergy to Lidocaine,a local anesthetic, that they have no alternative. Instead, the Hospital suggested having the cystoscopy using a lubricant (Ky Jelly)

Just wondering if anyone here has had a cystoscopy without using any local?

The consultant is really lovely & said he is happy to use gas & air for the procedure. I never had this during childbirth so no idea what it’s like. I was just wondering if I just took some paracetamol beforehand if this would suffice?

Thanks so much

  • If it's any help I found gas and air fine for second childbirth which was a high-speed affair [12 mins after I got in the unit door to delivery!]. I had had pethidine for the first and didn't like it much [too knockout]. I have never had a cystoscopy myself though as it is my husband who has the bc so I can't offer you a comparison.

    Best wishes, Denby

  • Hi Denby,

I will re book and try the gas and air. Thank you.

  • Hope it works well for you. Little known is that 7% of the whole population have a DNA 'anomaly' which means the liver lacks or partially lacks the enzymes that process many meds such as lidocaine often used for dental work. The result is no anaesthetic and all the side effects. The NHS does not even do the genetic test for this, which affects a huge proportion of common meds including fluoxetine [Prozac]. Scandal.

Hope the gas and air does the trick for you,

  • Hi Denby,

    I did not know that.

I had such a severe reaction to the local. I came out in hives all over my body, then had itching in my thoat, even my ears. I then had difficulty breathing & the paramedics were called. Very frightening experience, yet I had received Lidocaine many, many times before & was fine. I have never had an allergic reaction before to anything.

I have been told that there is no further allergy testing available now & to just avoid Lidocaine in the future.

I suppose it’s just the thought of having the cystoscopy without any numbing gel but I can’t take the risk of not having the procedure.

On both my children, I waited until the very  last minute before I went to the Hospital lol & they said I was to late have the Pethidine. I didn’t like the mask so never tried the gas & air.

    Thanks so much for replying

  • Hi.

I'm not allergic to lidocaine but it has absolutely no effect on me. Its like I'm immune to it. My children are the same.... so we avoid it. I often have procedures with no anesthetic at all as doctors do not know what else to give me. I will definitely be suggesting they give me the gas and air as am alternative in the future. Grinning

  • Hi Aprildaisies75

Oh your so brave lol. Yes,ask for gas & air for your next procedure. My dental practice said that they have an alternative local, without any adrenaline. Forgot what they said it was called now, which they use for pregnant woman and that I can try that at my next appointment as I need a tooth extracted!
Only wish the Hospitals were as helpful!
I have not re booked the cystoscopy yet.... symptoms seem much better after almost a year of pain & discomfort. Going to hold off for a little while & see how it goes. Worried the cystoscopy may trigger it all off again.

    Thanks so much for posting

  • Don't think you have to have a mask for gas & air - more like a hookah pipe that you suck on.

  • Hi

I have to be referred to hospital for tooth extractions because of my issues with anaesthetic so I actually think you are brave for going to the dentist.......ha ha

My son had surgery on his foot when he was 5 and he woke up from the GA during the procedure.... must be a genetic thing we have.

  • Did you read my post above about just that -genetic thing re many many meds incl various anaesthetics? The NHS do not even have a test for it, but you can send a cheek swab [ie easy DIY] to the USA, I will check how much it now costs when I have time.

  • Hi Teasseill,

Oh I didn’t know that. Great, thats much better as I hate the thought of gas & air through a mask. Bad experience as a young child at the dentist.

    Thanks  so much for posting.
